The Medicine Buddha mantra.
I chanted this as well as Om Mani Padme Hum every day when my mom was in the hospital, she was in the ICU for a week and we didn't know if she was going to live. Shes alive and well. Im not going to say I believe in magic or something, but I did put all my focus and love into chanting this and now Im a firm believer in it. And, its been proven medically that your mind set affects your body and health. As for my mom, I chanted this for her, so it was my energy that was the main factor (docs and nurses help is a given)
Anyway, try it out if you want. Its a beautiful mantra if nothing else.
Metta to you, and all beings.

This is a sonnet by Conrad Aiken I set to music (I originally wrote the music back in 1990). The sonnet is from a larger sequence called And In The Human Heart (1940). I've always had a thing for his poetry-- I've set three of his poems to music in the past.

Anyway, I was finally able to get my computer to record sound decently so here it is:

[LINK HERE]

Bend as the bow bends, and let fly the shaft,
the strong cord loose its word as light as flame;
speak without cunning, love, as without craft,
careless of answer, as of shame or blame.
This to be known, that love is love, despite
knowledge or ignorance, truth, untruth, despair;
careless of all things, if that love be bright,
careless of hate and fate, careless of care.
Spring the word as it must, the leaf or flower,
broken or bruised, yet let it, broken, speak
of time transcending this too transient hour,
and space that finds the beating heart too weak.
Thus, and thus only, will our tempest come
by continents of snow to find a home.

~ Conrad Aiken

In the forward to DT Suzuki's "Introduction to Zen Buddhism," Carl Jung wrote: "Great as is the value of Zen Buddhism for the understanding of the religious transformation process, its use among Western peoples is very improbable. The spiritual conceptions necessary to Zen are missing in the West."

In her book, "Eyes Wide Open," Dr Mariana Caplan talks of "the spiritual marketplace" - both for physical objects (clothes, statutes, incense...) and for teachers. In my mind that translates to a capitalist invasion of spirituality. Capitalism being a Western construct and mind-set.

The larger implication to me is that many learned people consider the Western psyche as incompatible with Buddhism. That Westerners lack a certain environment and conditioning that would otherwise allow Westerners to fully immerse into Buddhist thought. Elements of Buddhism are outside the Westerners ability to comprehend and assimilate.

I must admit, that I accept the probability that I am held captive by my Western-world conditioning.

What are your thoughts?

Peace to you.

Don't know how many of you have seen the new movie, released in December, but it's really worth the view. It does contain some nudity and sex, but no full frontal. I don't recall any violence. From a literary/historical point of of view I have no clue what it may offer you.

Begins in 1947. I hadn't really been aware that Kerouac, Ginsburg, et al. had been hanging out quite so early.

I read the beat poets years and years ago and haven't picked those old works up since. But the movie...

What struck me most was the monumental amount of self-indulgent behavior that the Dean Moriarty (Neal Cassady) character engaged in. Whether it was sex, drugs, music, or just using people, all he seemed to occupy himself with was the thrill of the moment, without any real regard for others. Sure, he valued companionship, but (as another character points out in soliloquy early in the film) he was only hoodwinking the other guy and he knew the other guy knew that he was being hoodwinked. But you can't help but like Dean and hope that he'll start steering straighter. That's what made the movie work for me. (Most movies with overly self-indulgent characters and raucous behaviors are promptly terminated with me.)

The film was a bit of a roller coaster ride for me, 'cuz I hate to see people get hurt. I kept hoping for a little bit of self-mortification and reason coming into Dean's life, but it never happened and the other characters make clear that that sort of thing never can happen to Dean.

It's an interesting story and only tragic in the case of Dean: a Dean who admits he's out of control; a man who is so self-absorbed that he seems incapable of truly encountering another human being on her or his own terms.

From the Buddhist perspective, I believe this colorful, wonderful film shows the folly of unbridled thirst for excitement and the misery which it is able to create through its thoughtlessness and its thirst for even further thoughtlessness. Ortega said that man has a mission on this earth and that mission is the mission of clarity. I can think of no one in human history who exemplified that quest more than Shakyamuni. Self-indulgence is a vicious circle from which there is no escape. Yet the Lord Buddha doesn't himself threaten with punishment for those lost along the waysides, but just gently points out a path: A path wherin to indulge more true aspects of the Self.

Here is an article that may explain that feeling of familiarity for Westerners, as well as explains how that familiarity limits our understanding of the Dharma.
I just met Julian Mantle, a successful and smart American lawyer who had nothing in mind but work. One day, he suddenly fainted in the middle of the courtroom. When he woke up, his doctor gave him two options: give up being a lawyer or give up life. That was his wake up call.

He realized he had terribly regretted his life and now he wanted to know more about it. So, he sold everything he had including his expensive Ferrari and went to the holy mountain of Himalayas. There he met sages who taught him about what life is. When he came back from Himalayas, Julian has become a monk.

Julian is a fictional character in the book "The Monk who Sold His Ferrari" by Robin Sharma. The book shared insights which I am sharing with you.

1. Saying that you don't have time to improve your thoughts and your life is like saying you don't have time to stop for gas because you are too busy driving. Eventually, it will catch up with you.

2. Most of us live at such a frenetic pace that true stillness and silence is something foreign and uncomfortable.

3. The quality of your thinking determines the quality of your life.

4. Here, in our society we have lost our passion. We do not do things because we love to do them. We do things because we feel we have to do them. This is a formula for misery.

5. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

More inspiring quotes from the book here

It is only 4.10 minutes long and it is made by one of my favourite animators. It was made when he simply found a bunge of junk in his garage and made a stop motion video out of it.
The story of a blind girl

There was a blind girl who hated herself just because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world, she would marry her boyfriend.

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see everything, including her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asked her, “now that you can see the world, will you marry me?”

The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind too, and refused to marry him. Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her saying:

“Just take care of my eyes dear.”

This is how human brain changes when the status changed. Only few remember what life was before, and who’s always been there even in the most painful situations.

Life Is A Gift

Today before you think of saying an unkind word–
think of someone who can’t speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food–
think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife–
think of someone who is crying out to God for a companion.

Today before you complain about life–
think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children–
think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn’t clean or sweep–
think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive–
think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job–
think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another–
remember that not one of us are without sin and we all answer to one maker.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down–
put a smile on your face and thank God you’re alive and still around.

Life is a gift – Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, and Fulfill it.

~unknown~

A true morality arises only in a meditator's conciousness. It is not something imported from the outside. It is something arising in your very being. It is spontaneous. And when morality is spontaneous it is a joy, it is simply sharing your compassion and love.

I really like that quote from Osho.
