What is all this "alt=" height="20" />" stuff?

I've come home from a long afternoon out and about, and I see on at least 3 different threads where someone has this type of 'alt = height = 00" type stuff.

Is this a new glitchy thing, because I'm sure they didn't mean to do that -- right?

We used to use the @ symbol to tag the person we were addressing a post to, and they'd automatically be notified of the post. But that doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there a new procedure?

yellow boxes

When I tried to quote I got all yellow box crap thing. So I deleted everything and put the text in NOT as a quote. The yellow text persisted.

Any ideas how to quote? And why did the yellow boxes persist even after I deleted? I even went to an additional response and somehow that one picked up the yellow.

Or will it be like the sound car makes when you take to mechanic ie no sound?

Just a heads up that a minor layout change is coming to the site today or perhaps in the coming weeks. The sidebar will be moving to the left side, and a few menus will change. I will be upgrading our forum software.

I can post my own pics from my camera....but how do you guys do images? If I do the long, old school way of downloading and then attaching......it's too teeny-tiny.....Copy and paste doesn't work...so please school me.

I'm going to be flipping NewBuddhist over to using Markdown to format your posts instead of HTML very soon. Why? * It's easier to read in the commenting box as you're writing * It's easier to remember & type than HTML * It's gained widespread support and adoption * There's really no downside I can think of * Using these asterisks would've auto-formatted this into a nice list if it was enabled already Functionally, very little will change for you. The button bar above the commenting box will stay exactly the same, it'll just use Markdown instead of HTML when you press the buttons. Old discussions & comments will stay in HTML forever (including if you edit them). Feelin' all technical and wanna learn more about Markdown? Here's the syntax guide: http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax Don't worry - you don't actually need to read that to use it since the buttons will still work and do it for you. Vanilla Forums (the software we use here) will probably start shipping with Markdown set as the default in the very near future. We're really in love with it and hope you all enjoy using it.

New: Ranks

I've added "Ranks" which will give you status as "New" (0-19 posts), "Explorer" (20-99 posts), or "Veteran" (100+ posts). This isn't an exercise in forum vanity. It's a practical way of managing spam and reducing the amount of false-positives that put legitimate member comments into the spam queue. Folks with the "Explorer" rank will bypass the spam filter, and "Veterans" will additionally get the "Title" and "Location" fields next to their names. It's a simple metric to say "you're not a spammer or you couldn't have made this many comments" before granting you some extra features that could be abused. You will get a little popup announcing your new Rank when it triggers, probably the next time you sign in.

What triggers a post going into an approval queue? I posted on a thread and the forum told me my post would appear after it was approved. Does that get triggered by user activity, or by posting a wrong word, or ... dunno, the mind boggles what the machine was reacting to. Just curious, no hard feelings, I support all machine and human moderation, even if it includes me-- it makes for a better forum.

Just an idea that occurred to me a minute ago: I think that NewBuddhist and Wikipedia have one major motive in common, namely promulgating knowledge and concern for getting at the truth of things. With that in mind, when I give moneys to Wikipedia I'd kinda like to be part of a team. Would anyone be interested in making Wikipedia a sister project and linking our Wikipedia contributions somehow with NewBuddhist? After all, Wikipedia is the major vehicle we drive around here. Background colors for NB site

@Lincoln Is there any way to change the background color(s) for the site? Right now it's an odd yellow-ish gold-y kind of color. Not exactly easy on the eyes. Any chance we can get a nice Christmas green, or wintery blue color - and maybe change it every season, or every couple of months or so? Just askin'..... I'm one of those people that rearranges furniture, changes colors of things, redoes things several times a year. Drives most people I know crazy- but keeps things 'fresh'. :D BTW- LOVE the snow flurry effects!!

I tried to change my profile picture and I keep getting the message that I can't upload this type of file.... I tried several different jpeg files, all resized as small as possible, and then even tried to reuse the one I had before trying to change it. Can't! Waaaah! :bawl: And it looks like smileys aren't coming up as pics either.... :-(

I made several visual tweaks to the site this morning. - Moved the breadcrumb ("where am I") trail to where redundant navigation used to be under the logo - Brought the search box back down from the ceiling (it looked like a helium balloon...) - Rearranged the sidebar navigation a little - Prettied up the discussions list with rounded-corner avatars and other minor tweaks - Added space around the page numbers for finger-poking on tablets

In our profiles, there is an option to not be seen as online/ on site by other members. (I assume we can still be seen by mods, but that's no issue with me anyway)... I've checked (and unchecked) this option's box a few different times over the months I've been here, but I still see my name come up in the "who's online" list on the left side of the main discussions page, no matter if it's checked or not. Am I the only one who can see MY name? Or does that particular privacy feature really not work?
