They have even gone as far as to make it illegal to reincarnate without filling out paperwork. If a 15th Dalai Lama is born in Tibet, it will be arrested.
Actually, the Chinese have no reason to assassinate the Dalai Lama, everything to lose and nothing at all to gain and they would know this. Nothing he can do or say right now will make a bit of difference in the Chinese policy toward Tibet. We've gotten used to the status quo. The world shakes its head, talks about how much they admire him, and says, "Isn't it terrible," but the real power is in the world's governments and they make deals with China, not Tibet in exile.
So he hasn't and won't do any real harm as it sits, and neither can his government in exile. The Chinese are not stupid and know that. But let evidence emerge that China assassinated him, and suddenly the world would have to "do something about it".
This evidence they claim to have? I'd place that in the catagory of pretty suspect. The White house claimed to have evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iran, too. So a super top secret undercover plot to poison the Dalai Lama using Tibet women with, I guess, poison on their scarfs or hands when they touch him? Someone's been watching too many James Bond movies, to me.
Hmmmm...I dunno.... however much credence you put on the story itself, there was a Russian assassinated with poison pellet out of the tip of an umbrella, in London a few years ago....James Bond movies be damned, we don't know half of what the capabilities are of different types of assassination. Far fetched as it may seem, it's actually not beyond the realms of possibility.

True. I might be giving their people more credit than they've earned. The people who run governments are capable of stupid behavior that anyone with a bit of sense knows is a huge mistake at the time. Then when the fecal matter hits the oscillating device, they trot out, "Well, nobody could have anticipated..."
I ended my military career in the Pentagon during the Reagon era. When I saw what a huge bunch of childish morons were actually in charge of this country and its military, I elected to leave the service.

And, as an aside - the youngest political prisoner you may never have heard of:
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was just 6 years old when he was recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, one of Tibet’s most important religious leaders. Just after this he and his family were taken into custody by the Chinese authorities and he has not been seen since.
25 April 2012 was his 23rd birthday, and this will be the 17th birthday he will spend in captivity.
Its unlikely they'd like to assassinate him he's way to high profile for that they will more likely wait till he passes away and select their own Dalai lama.

Didn't the Dalai Lama state that the next rebirth would be in the west anyway?

To the contrary, they've insisted that the Dalai Lama must reincarnate. They issued an international press release to that effect a year or two ago. Is this some new twist, @ourself--imposing bureaucratic requirements on him before he can reincarnate? The Chinese make no sense.
Besides the DL isn't planning on reincarnating in Tibet, so there's no issue about the 15th being arrested.
@ourself The ban on reincarnation is old news. It's been superceded by the Chinese announcement last year that the DL must reincarnate, he has to uphold tradition. This was in response to his speculating that he may not reincarnate at all, and have an end to Dalai Lamas.
I find it hilarious that the "godless communist" Chinese are saying that HHDL *has* to reincarnate. What's even more amazing is their inability to see the hypocrisy in their statements.
What the Chinese government wants is control over the Dalai Lama. Id almost go as far as to predict two Dalai Lamas. One recognized by convention and one raised in a lab.

The Chinese have wanted to eliminate him since 1950.....
Are you serious?
are you unaware of the history of China/Tibet relations of the last century?

He's stated many things. He's said the present incarnation could be the last and he's also said it could be female.
@Dakini;
The ban on reincarnation? That's old news. I found out about that a few years ago.
