I'm actually in favor of modernizing the monkhood in Thailand. But I think it would be better if monks were screened. And, I think they should end the practice of many Thai men becoming monks for a short time as a rite of passage, and simply admit those who have an intention of remaining in the monkhood for an extended period of time.

  • That's sad. :(

The response (obviously fictional) that made me laugh was, ""He admitted to taking drugs to pass time..." They left the part out when he was quoted as saying: "Meditation? That's so yesterday"

  • in the city where I live,
there a tens if not hundreds of fake thai monks.
they capitalise on people's willingness to give
    generously to monks.
by fake monks, i means these people who look and dress
like thai monks, are not monks.
they just dress up like monks to get some easy money.

back to the OP, monks are human beings, and the motivation
to become a monk varies, some out of poverty, etc.
so it is completely normal for a monk to be caught with drugs, IMHO.

    1. I guess I have to ask which city you live in.

    2. "it is completely normal for a monk to be caught with drugs". B-------!
