What exactly needs to be done in zazen? Any ideas, please suggest. Thanks in advance.

    Sit.
    Stop asking questions.
See obscurations as they arise in the mind.
    Allow them to pass unhindered.
    Stop asking questions.
    Sit.

Nothing.....(well apart from breathing, but this happens without having to 'do'it)
The minute one 'tries' to 'do' zazen, it's no longer zazen....

Siting or walking and paying one attention to your breathe. Disattach yourself from thoughts, dont label them, and dont make an idea of what zazen should be. Its a discipline practice and it helps keep you in the present moment. You just be. ..Also what Shoshin said.

I practiced Zazen long time ago. Still do but not related to Zen teachings anymore.

BUDDHISM is about being in the Present Moment (among other things). That's what Mindfulness is.

Zazen is about developing Insight into the Nature of Existence.
    Rinzai studies Koans.
Soto prefers an approach where the mind has no object at all, known as shikantaza
