How does one ever get over some such virulent hatred as this?

All our hearts, I'm sure, go out to the fine people Of Pakistan.

What can we say? My Pakistani friends are stunned. Even those who did not support Mrs Bhutto are unanimous in their horror. They are also deeply suspicious of the Musharaf regime's possible involvement in the death - conspiracy theories abound.

At our distance from the scene, perhaps it is time to reflect that we have governments which approve of assassination as a tool of politics. When the holders of the mandate to govern give their consent, even encouragement, to such barbarism, how can we be surprised that such acts occur?

While we weep at the death of yet another democrat, yet another voice for human rights, should we not also be making some political decisions as regards our own houses? They may need a pretty radical spring-cleaning too?
