I have been studying religion and degree level for the first time this year and went into it without areligious background. i am becoming very drawn to buddhism and would love to find out more about becoming a buddhist. any advice?

Yes. Feel free to explore. You can become a buddhist after you are convinced about it's teachings, principles and values. Don't hurry, take your time and study with an opened heart. Let the energy flow naturally and freely in you. Internalised before you can externalise.
