It's all New Agey, sweetheart. The goal of guided meditation is to relax and feel good. The goal of Buddhist meditation is to train the mind. At least, that's how it looks from here.

I have used the following, which were useful at 1st but are now a little irritating. good for getting into the swing of it, but you will soon want to meditate without them (Ignore the references to pain in the blurb on the casing/amazon description etc, they are basic, simple meditations which do not focus on pain and illness in reality, this blurb is because they are produced by body works so its more in keeping with the body works image than the actual content of the cd)

    Midnfulness of breathing: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindfulness-Breathing-set-mindfulness-meditation/dp/095501204X/ref=pd_sim_b_3

    Metta Bhavana: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kindly-Awareness-set-minfulness-meditation/dp/0955012058/ref=pd_sim_b_4

I dont know of any free ones, maybe you could record your own with a dictaphone by reading out a script from a meditation guide book. Or get a friend to record it for you.

Just wanted to say I love the way I get to smile reading posts like "enya duetting with the ice princess, kinda stuff " online - that is why I keep coming back !!! I have participated in some guided meditation sessions at a public teaching where an experienced meditator was a speaker who guided the group initially then left the group to continue - no music or background noise ... it has been useful in my clinical work, though this was very structured and had well defined objectives - not sure what research has been done ( I did initially think of research in this area and did not get as far as a search to see what work has been done ). <!-- / message -->

OP: "The Inner Art of Meditation" by Jack Kornfield. It's actually a class that took place over a 5 week period. It is primarily concerned with Vipassana, or insight-meditation. It's guided in that they are recordings of the full sessions, so that you're receiving instruction at the proper time, hear Q&A from those who were in the class, actually get to meditate for 15 minute intervals with the whole class... very nice IMHO.

If you really want to follow it as if you were taking these classes, then listen to the first class and then spend a week meditating by yourself each day before you take the next class. That way you build up some experience before the material gets more complicated. Take the 2nd class, spend another week meditating as instructed, rinse and repeat.

Here's the link on Amazon, though might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere (eBay maybe): http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Art-Meditation-Jack-Kornfield/dp/1564552225

This video is about relaxing the body which is an imperative for Insight meditation.
