    It helps to take a deep breath and stretch before sitting. Once sitting you relinquish control of the breath. The breath breaths all by itself. Zazen is just the basic space in which your bodymind sits there and breaths.
    Zazen is just that basic space. Thoughts come and go, them maybe settle. The body sits there, feeling this way, then that way. The breath goes in and out. The breath is not isolated or fixated on, it is just part of the whole picture, along with your bum on the cushion, the floor or wall in front of you, sounds, and the basic ambience of your present state of being no matter what its quality.
