Going to be a professional Buddhist (that is, a monk) in a couple years.

So I guess that means I'll have to learn about sleeping less than I do right now, so that I can more appropriately emulate this rather unhealthy-looking aspect.

Right now I am an adolescent high school student neglecting his duty to be concerned with extracurricular activities.

I feed people as a "sandwich artist" at Subway, and I also make their desserts (like sundaes, smoothies, chillers, etc.) at a TCBY.

It's really called a sandwich artist? I love subway. I go there all the time. I just went there an hour ago and will now eat my sandwich, om nom nom. :D

As goofy as it sounds, that's the official job title.

  • Very interesting.

Me. Well I'm a "retired" computer systems analyst. Turned real estate investor. Turned very very poor guy.

For the last couple of years my job has been to help people on their travels.

I work as a guest services agent in a hotel. Doesn't pay much, but that's ok. Money does not buy happiness.

I work the late late shift and I get to see all kinds of people in different circumstances. Of course they all have one thing in common, they are away from home.

Sometimes when I am checking them in I will ask - "Have you journeyed far to get to our hotel tonight?" Most of the people will tell me of their home town or where they spent last night or the ordeal of their day. Occasionally they will think, smile, and just say "Yes." :)

I'm a Network Analyst (very pooncy title for an IT Geek) and I find it soul destroying to be perfectly honest. But it pays the bills and the school fees so I will stick it out for a bit longer.

I'm looking at returning to Uni to do a Bachelor of Ancient History - neck deep in books on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece would really float my boat :)

  • Hellenic history, except for the overhwelming uncertainty of it, is pretty much the best. Well, Roman history too.

  • The thing is I am already 25...when I will finish I will be like 27 or 28.
    AHHH!
I have shoes older than you :) I started my second BS degree when I was 42, and have just now embarked on my master's (possibly a clinical doctorate - yet to be decided) at age 48. Don't sweat the time line.

  • I agree with Dhammachick. I was a network security engineer, then moved into technical support management for Silicon Valley vendors five years back. Totally. Soul. Destroying. Too much money, too little relevance to life.

Right now I am saving money to do a Buddhist Studies BA at Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal in the next five years or so when I hit age 50.

Mountains, how on God's green earth did you manage to keep shoes for that long? :-)

I work as an Electronic Design Engineer as well as studying and practising Buddhism and voluntarily teaching (and training in) Martial Arts. I consider my Buddhist studies to be far more valuable that my occupation, though I try to integrate my work with my studies.

My wish would to be able to do something that involves buddhism 100% of the time, yet at this point in time, I don't see the conditions to be heading in that direction. Time will tell if causes and conditions will align with my aspiration in this respect.

It would be good to go back to Uni to study Buddhism formally but as the days of free schooling have fallen by the wayside its enough to earn what's needed just to live.

    Cheers, WK
  • I am a winemaker in Napa. The Buddha would not be pleased. =)

I was originally an RN working in ER and ITU. Did my BSc Hons in Psychology, then worked in pharmaceutical sales (which I absolutely hated, but was good at), left after two years and worked as an AIDS and sexual health counsellor for the NHS. Next I taught at University and college for six years. Took my current post as a head of department in an independent school nine years ago and love it. Hoping to keep it until my health gives out - I have a life threatening heart condition, depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and several other problems. Guess I must have been a very naughty girl in a past life ;) But must have also accrued some good kamma too as I'm happily married, well paid, nice job and lots of privileges (time to study & rest, books, education, family, living in one of the wealthiest and most liberal countries in the world)!
  • Dental insurance by day, super awesome heroine by night... hana

I don't sell insurance, im more in accounting, managing premium payments and what not. Its not bad, but there's no room for creativity. Im an artist at heart love to paint, write, sew etc.
  • I have three jobs now and may be getting a fourth... :hair:

No, Fran is British. The reference to NHS (National Health Service) should be a clue. I think Mountains would agree with me that there are other wealthy, and many more liberal (horrors!) countries than the US......
  • I work in Sales at a Telecommunications company.

And at night - and in my spare time - i explore consciousness!

No! Say it isn't so!! I guess you couldn't see my tongue planted *firmly* in my cheek as I wrote that post above, eh?

(actually, I did. Canadians have a good sense of 'dry wit' detection. After all, most American comedians are really Canadian............ :)

    Only the socialist ones :)
  • I work as a dishwasher at a restaurant.
  • I'm a parent-carer and part-time student. I look after my son, who has autism and other complex needs. I also have two teenage girls, both of whom have milder special needs. And when they're at school, I am studying for a masters degree in philosophy with the Open University, which specialise in distance learning.

I've been in poor health lately, but when I can I also volunteer for Arthritis Care, helping them with leafleting and marketing of the charity's services for people with arthritis. I also help out in an Oxfam charity shop, which I've been doing for many years now.

    So I don't work but I'm really busy :)
