Personally I find Shinzen Young accords with my experience and normal practice. He knows what he is talking about.

There is no 'great mystery' or must be revealed by 'levitating lama revealer' requirement. Though obviously such inspiration, explanation and direction is useful ...

    Shinzen Young knows what shikantaza
is about (another name for this 'technique')

    (includes short guided examples)

Sometimes we need to start with focus or intention, breath counting awareness type practice.

If understood and practiced, then formless, empty, Mahamudra, Dzogchen or 'emptiness of emptiness' type sitting becomes a natural 'formal sitting without intention to meditate'.

    Iz no-plan!

    Thanks @lobster,

"Do nothing" meditation is a piece of cake.... nothing to it...

    On a more serious note....
When it comes to "Do Nothing" meditation...
There is really nothing to it, however, it would seem that the clinging, grasping mind that craves the experience, will attempt to make something of nothing ...( Force of habit ) :)

Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself.

  • My understanding is that mindfulness and 'doing nothing' sitting are closely related. Interestingly they are suitable for beginners and considered 'advanced'.

    Subtle and simple.

Paradoxically the whole range of skilful means are ways of 'nothing doing' or doing nothing. No intention, just attention ...
