what makes you happy?

Hi

what makes you happy?

Are you happy right now?

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him.
If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought,
happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. “

Being released from suffering, that is quite good. Being in nature, beach walks, mountain walks. Family gatherings, I like the emotional closeness. Making delicious food for other people.

    what makes you happy?

A great question. There is happiness that is conditioned by circumstances - always temporary, ephemeral. And there is happiness that is unconditioned, the joy, perhaps, that is one of the factors of enlightenment, and is independent of circumstances.

The one thing, the one conditioned thing, that always makes me happy is the act of painting. This seems to be because in painting I am able to focus on one thing and one thing only. All other thoughts are banished, all the dark clouds of the mind are blown away like smoke in the wind, energy flows unimpeded and all the turbulence of life is banished for a while.

As for unconditioned happiness, still working on it.

    Everything :3

    Are you happy right now?

    Yes B)

When I am happy, it is total. I am listening to birdsong, bubbling brook and music (an app called flow) whilst posting to NewBuddhist ...
In fact I would call it euphoric ... <3

    The Buddha done it ... ! o:)

    • Eating a ton of crappy junk food without gaining a pound/kilo.
    • Watching Lucifer
    • Cheap petrol prices
    • Seeing Collingwood being defeated at AFL.....

Yeah I'm shallow. But at least I can admit it.

    Are you happy right now?

No but centred would be more accurate.

The thing that made me most happy yesterday was taking my dog for a walk in the park. It was a breezy, Autumnal day and the leaves were crunching under our feet as we strolled by the creek. It's always calming and peaceful to spend time with nature, and my dog loves exploring outside, which makes me even happier to know that I brought him a little happiness in return for all the happiness he brings me.

working towards my materialistic aim - don't know if that makes me happy, but it keeps me actively engaged.

  • What do you really want, happiness or peace?

“Happiness is a by-product. You cannot pursue it by itself.”

When we are at peace within ourselves, we become more accepting, loving, compassionate and understanding of ourselves and others. We are more able to share, co-operate and be of service. These are the most important intrinsic factors leading to happiness.

When we say we ‘just want to be happy’, what we really want is the peace to make happy choices.

Happy =. The beginnings of inner calm and self worth I've recently discovered, and walking through autumnal trees whilst silently chanting.

I have things in my life that give me pleasure.

As my practice develops I find that happiness isn't as dependent on getting the things that I enjoy and avoiding the things I don't want.

    I liked it, anyway....

    I make myself happy. . . .

I'd like to be able to say this too. But I can't quite. I am fundamentally happy. Never quite really content, but definitely happy. I don't think there's anything I do, or think, to bring this about, though. It's often said that you're happy if you decide to be, but that doesn't match my experience. I think I must be happy for the same reason I have brown eyes. No virtue or effort or decision on my part; just lucky.

Very important - inner calm and self worth. Find your happy. Then some more. Keep up the good work.

  • Hi, I'm new here! What makes me happy? Quite a few things do...

    • hanging out on my own, with other people or with my cat
    • looking at the view from my flat's balcony, from a train, from a mountain
    • walking in the countryside, through woodland, across a meadow, among mountains
    • listening to the sound of waves breaking on the beach or to birdsong
    • intimacy with loved ones
    • singing along to the car radio
    • funny / cute cat videos on YouTube
    • learning the bass and jamming with friends
    • sharing with others

While posting this it's been nice to reflect on what makes me happy because it shows to me that it's the little things that bring joy to my life. So I don't need to get too anxious about the other things going on in the world which are not part of my direct experience or things that, if they go wrong, won't really affect my happiness.

    Tee Hee!
^^. Making lists, reflecting through blog or journal ... mmm good plan ...

    Happy list:

    • Calling our orange halloween pumpkin, 'Trump'
    • Being evil (controlled conditions only guys)
    • Eating the insides of Trump and putting a light in him
    • Fixing my boiler, without calling the condescending maintenace guy (they are experts)
    • Eating sausages in front of vegans ... did I mention being evil?
    • Seeing my sisters holiday vids in front of Trump (remember orange pumpkin head?)
    • Making porridge with bananas, raisins, coconut fat on 'no cooking day'
    • Watching Stewart Lee (British comedian) on Youtube
    • Using, configuring getting used to my new Ubuntu fuelled computer
    • Ignoring, laughing at, feeling superior to those Buddhists who say I am not a Buddhist
    • Not needing to be 'An authetically accredited Buddhist'
    • Meditating, being mindful ... making endless lists ... and stop!
