Does anyone know of a good sangha that video broadcasts services on the Internet?

ktc2ktc2 R'lyeh New

I am located in a place where there is no sangha within about 150 miles. Can anyone recommend a sangha that broadcasts its services over the Internet so I can watch from home? I'm new to Buddhism and am looking for a place to learn, even if I can't be there in person.

There are countless podcasts on youtube; which tradition do you follow, or do you wish to 'spread your options'...?

I can't personally think, or know, of any sangha that does 'live' broadcasts, but there are very many different teachings available as videos, if that's any help...

There's also a really good website if you'd like to explore Theravada teachings, called AccesstoInsight. The font of information there is literally virtually bottomless...

Tibetan gelug the knowledge base on Buddhism and Asian classics institutes email them on online teaching.

My geshe has a past the founder but is a good teacher

Even if you are not particularly drawn to Theravāda Buddhism, I would second Federica's suggestion. AccesstoInsight & SuttaCentral IMO are the best digitized sources for authentic Buddhist scripture that I know of in English.

You might be further interested in Śrāvastīvihāra (Shravasti Abbey), which has a wonderful web presence linked to the superb Venerable Thubten Chodron Bhikṣunī. Their YouTube page is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/sravastiabbey

I believe Ajahn Brahm streams some of his talks live and answers questions via email from around the world in them. I don't know where to find them, but some searching should be able to find it.

Yes, Ajahn Brahm (Theravadan tradition) live streams many talks from his Monastery in Western Australia

And Venerable Thubten Chodron (Tibetan tradition) does the same

    Can recommend both!

  • As well as video consider audio, even if not 'live', for example:

Maybe this helps, it's an online sangha meeting twice per month::

The dharma center I have been attending, Urban Dharma NC, has livestreams on Facebook. They’re pretty easy to find if you pop their name into the search function on FB.

You can check out this website. I have never accessed it (nor Gelek Rimpoche) since I we have a Geshe teaching in my own city.
But my sister, living elsewhere, was introduced to Tibetan Buddhism by Gelek Rimpoche and was very impressed with him.
And he has written a book "Good Life, Good Death" which I was very impressed with. You might want to read the book first.
The center he founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan has some teachings that appear to be online/live:

  • I second Sravasti Abbey on YouTube. They also have a web based learning group called SAFE. Only so many spots though. I am in year two myself and deeply grateful for the teachings.

Insight Hour with Joseph Goldstein- is audio dhamma talks available on Soundcloud; Spotify and Youtube- or beherenownetwork.com (which includes talks by various others on Buddhism and some on other topics too)

I like Joseph because he talks in a very simple way; and although he has been practicing for over 40 years mostly in Theravada/Vipassana tradition explains Buddhism in the spirit of one dhamma.

Very accessible and quite a growing collection of Episodes: 79 so far...

I find they are great for travelling or lying down and listening too.

    He is a good egg.

Plum Village has a free app. for mobile phones- which has various resources; practices; guided meditations; contemplations; an 'ask Thay' section (similar to the Q&A youtube videos with Thich Nhat Hanh) you can also set a bell to ring from your phone at intervals of 5 mins to 60 mins- to bring you back to your body- At Plum Village I believe this sounds every 15 mins where everyone stops what they are doing relax the body and become aware of their breathing and enjoy 3 in and out breathes- but take what you need from it...

(I know you asked about videos- but I find the podcasts and app. a great help)

  • @elcra1go thank you for the resource! I never really got into Ram Das but that link had an amazing talk, at least part 1 of it , about “what good is the astral? “

On You Tube look up Garchen Buddhist Institute...they broadcast most meditation classes and other ceremonies.

Sadly, ktc2 hasn't been back since posting this thread which was 2 years ago.

This is the problem sometimes with reviving 'necro' or ancient threads...

    General request to all members:

Please look at the date of the first/original post, and check the thread for the last post too. If it's over a year ago, or the first contributor doesn't appear within a year of the current date, please start a new thread, if necessary, or let it be...

I think it's both kind and considerate to offer support and help. I just think it's a shame for those who respond, if their kind contribution lands on deaf ears...

That said, I often think of forums as a general repository of information, and you never know when a google search is going to deposit someone at the newbuddhist topic and benefits from your answer...

That's what the search facility is for.
