  • My job would be considered pretty unwholesome by most Buddhists in the west. Asian Buddhists, not so much. It's interesting though, as a commercial fisherman, I am generally treated with respect by people. We seem to be considered salt of the earth…
  • Another good book to start with is this one. http://www.amazon.com/Sun-Wisdom-Teachings-Nagarjunas-Fundamental/dp/1570629994

  • So rather than discovering the truth for yourselves, you guys will trust the words of Linji, a monk who died over a thousand years ago. Should we trust that you will wear Linji's words faithfully? I think most people would take Linji's words to be …
  • You should take a holiday to Canada some time @music. It seems like India is not doing it for you. I guess I have a better understanding of why we have such a large south Asian community here. Sounds like a real hell hole over there. As for your adv…
  • My sailboat. The fishboat could qualify as a hobby as well considering how much of what should be my free time goes into it. I'm interested in all kinds of boats. Motorcycling.
  • I personally enjoy @lobster's comments. Sometimes I understand them (I think) better than other times, but I enjoy his ability to make one think and have to consider what he is really saying. I don't pretend to assume what his goal is. But I think h…

  • Lobster, I see you're laughing about this. That's doesn't bother me, but it's your problem, man. Just take it easy on the whole Buddhahood idea. You may not listen to me, but at least I've warned you. All this topics of yours with "I'll do it this …

  • SSRI's can cause agitation in some people so clonazapam is prescribed to counter it. That's the way it went for me when I was on Paxil. I found the clonazapam to be so mild that it really would not even make me sleepy.
  • Look at your life. Look at the lives of people you know. Of family and friends and strangers. Decide for yourself if the teaching is literally true. That is what discernment is.
  • I'm only guessing because I can't find proof on the web, but I'd say they are most likely raised in ponds.
  • I thought that the Buddha, upon awakening, felt that what he had realized was not teachable, and had to be talked into teaching it.
  • This world is a house of darkness. To search for light is to search for an illusion - it is an exercise in futility. As Buddhists, let us just accept that samsara sucks and try to get out of it. Let worldly people worry about the world. You live in …

  • Well, that is a really interesting article. It is making more sense to me now. Chengdu which is in Szechuan region of China has a population of 14,000,000 (according to wiki), Chinese, who of course, eat plenty of fish and prefer to buy it live when…
  • I would like more information about this practice of buying up "millions" of fish from markets in Tibet. Can someone provide a link? I have a pretty good idea what millions of fish looks like. It's a pretty big pile. I would guess that there A. Are…
  • For me, whether or not we are reborn is only an issue of how the belief affects my view. If I am going to be reborn then whether or not I have that belief will not affect the outcome. If I hold the belief in literal rebirth, will that belief reinfo…
  • My kid turned me on to these guys.
  • You have described the draw backs of catch and release fishing. The fish suffers undue stress which kills a percentage of those released even if they swim away. Other injuries cause immediate death or death later from loss of blood or predation due …
  • I ran up against this sort of thing a number of times in Thailand, where it is assumed that guys my age are having a sex and booze holiday. In having a casual conversation with fellow male travellers I often find myself going along with their tales…
  • Kill all the mosquitoes you want but also wear bug repellent with Deet in it to protect yourself at night. It really keeps them away.
  • The shambala publications audio book version of the Way of the Bodhisattva is really well done. The fellow reading it does a great job and manages to add an emotional emphasis to the different chapters.
  • How did the DPRK became an adversary of the US? It is not oil rich. It is not encroaching on your territory. It is dirt poor and on the point of self implosion. All its acts are acts of desperation and survival. Since when has it become a threat to …
  • I don't think there is an appropriate Buddhist reaction to that scenario. I would have to go along with the most likely response which would be to bomb their infrastructure and military into oblivion. Hopefully with conventional weapons. Like the …
  • Laos. Beautiful land and lovely people. I was hoping to hop over there in a week or so to get away from the Songkran festival in Thailand, it gets crazier and more silly each year. Quick fact about Laos, it is the most bombed country in the world an…

  • Try Ghost Rider by Neil Peart. After losing his daughter to an accident then his wife a short time later to cancer his grief was very intense. He gave up his music and went on a continent wide motorcycle trip. It's a really good read.
  • For me meditation is mainly for developing concentration. I have noticed that with improved concentration certain activities have become easier. Reading comprehension. Listening to music and attention to conversations. My ability to focus on what is…
  • It's fine at first. But with time and experience all the notions of Buddhism and Christianity will dismantle. Whether we try to create a new religion or negate/affirm buddhadharma or Christianity it will all fall apart if we are sincere in our exp…
  • I think a bigger concern for some than the radio waves they put out is the information that they are capable of gathering from your appliances about your lifestyle. Information that can be used to target advertising and such. I have been told that i…

  • What I mean by preventing dukkha-ridden circumstances I think you just need to reflect on and the answer will become clear. My copy of the Dhammapada is in its honoured place on my bookshelf. Thanks for the reminder. I understood what you meant h…
  • "Karma, monks, is intention..." Is the intention to do harm to the new lifeform or to spare it from harm? That makes all the difference, especially in cases where the mother feels like she is sparing the new lifeform from a potentially dukkha-ridde…
  • If someone has cancer and then " practises generosity " whatever that means, and is subsequently free of it then the obvious conclusion is that the cancer was the result somehow of a lack of generosity..which is not only bullshit in medical terns,…
