I usually use the term spirituality
to refer to any transcendence of our own ego's inertia over others.
the term religiousness
to refer to humanities interests in laying some claims to that transcendence.
Just a few thoughts
These hauntings are just the manifestations of any self wrought identity,
which means that I think that everyone is subject to them to some extent.
To the Buddhist meditator, they can be meditation teachers telling us to wake up from where ever we are.
These hauntings are actually fed and cause suffering whenever we cling to them, push them away or try to ignore them.
They lose their ability to cause suffering when we learn to stop trying to control their existence.
For me, they indicate some lack of acceptance on my part for where ever I presently am.
When I recognize this, to the degree that I am able to lovingly accept the whole of where ever I presently am, is the same degree to which they no longer cause me to suffer.
Soto Zen was the first spiritual love
to allow me a possession-less love,
that could transcend it's own identity.
Nothing that an ever widening heart
doesn't offer to anyone
practicing the Buddha's Dharma.
Teachers can be very helpful in having us address aspects of our own ignorance that we would probably otherwise resist facing..
I also think that a successful meditation practice, is that practice which can allow all of existence to be your meditation teacher.
We can only start where we presently are. If in this moment, a teacher is not present, then I'd recommend a study of the various forms of practice to see what makes sense as a place for you to start teaching yourself about meditation.
When meditation teachers do start showing up, (and they always do) you'll already have some practicing experience under your belt to help you assess what they offer.
