  • Downloaded (too much of!) Gabriel Faure's chamber music today. I've never explored much of his stuff aside from his Requiem.

This song right here was originally a Johnny Cash song, but I much prefer this version, it seems much more solemn. I can't help but tear up.

Oh bury me not on the lone prairie
Where the coyotes wail and the wind blows free
And when I die don't bury me
Beneath the western sky on the lone prairie

Oh bury me not on the lone prairie
These words came soft and painfully
From the pallid lips of a youth who lay
On his dying bed at the break of day

But we buried him there on the lone prairie
Where the rattlesnakes hiss and the wind blows free
In a shallow grave, no one to grieve
Beneath the western sky on the lone prairie

Oh bury me not on the lone prairie
These words came soft and painfully
From the pallid lips of a youth who lay
On his dying bed at the break of day

On his dying bed at the break of day

After much prodding by my daughter I recently changed the strings on her guitar, and the sound of the new strings inspired her to record and post a cover of the Fossil Collective song; Let It Go:

I heard that this song was "The most dangerous song to listen to while riding a motorbike" and, after I tried it, I'd tend to agree. While it was playing I found myself breaking the speed limit by quite a wide margin, passing on blind corners, etc.

I enjoyed how far I had to lean down to the road to make the corners and curves at those speeds. the sky seemed "bigger" as well. Plus it was nice to get from point A to point B in under a quarter of the time.

    Good song though.

Best recording (IMO) of Thomas Tallis heavenly piece, Spem in alium -- performed by the Huelgas Ensemble. And it is all one-voice-per-part: 40 parts, 40 voices.

After having Pink Floyd force fed to me over and over by the guy I shared a room with at university, I swore that I would never listen to anything by them ever again- at least if I could help it.

Naturally, I'm now listening to the The Dark Side of the Moon. I never could keep a grudge!

OK, I'm only 40 years behind everyone else, but where's the rush? :D

Can I suggest that you back to where it all began...back to the Syd Barrett days and listen to 'The Piper At The gates Of Dawn '...it was all downhill after that imo. ;)
  • Suggestion gladly taken. I remember reading about poor old Syd a few years back and his supposed decent into madness. Interesting character that's for sure.

I found this song by chance, I LOVE the relaxed nature of it. I mean it feels so laid back I can't help but sink back into my chair and feel maybe a bit lazy and content.

Anyone know of any other songs/bands that sound similar to this?

  • Just found this. It's easy to laugh at this sort of thing but it's pretty impressive. Damian Wilson's voice is great. Spinal Tap comes to mind, but I like a bit of rockpomp and guitar mayhem.

A little bit of Vivaldi. This video also has some interesting footage of people from the Carnevale di Venezia. Which is an interesting annual event. Everyone who bothers to do so in the whole city of Venice wears these masks, the intent being to be able to party, anonymously. Plus the costumes are interesting as well, and many of the mask designs date back to Renaissance times

  • Any of you fathers out there? or hell, parents in general, I guess?

This song right here, it's metal. But goddamn if it isn't the finest display of heart-rending man emotions out there. Makes me choke up every time. Just imagine if your kid died, what would you be feeling? I think this song actually displays what I'd feel quite accurately. A sense of saddened, subdued anger.

I feel a chill in my heart
    Like lingering winter cold
I and my son are torn apart
He was just 6 winters old

    My first-born was he
And the last of my kin
The last one to carry my name
Death smiled at him its deadly grin
There is no one for me to blame

The fate of Norns await us all
There is no way to escape
The day to answer Oden's call
    Or walk through Hel's gate

I carry him to my ship
    He seems to be asleep
But the deep blue colour of his lips
Is enough to make me weep

No man should have to bury his child
Yet this has been my share
The tears i shed run bitter and wild
It's a heavy burden to bear

His body feels so light in my arms
His skin is pale as snow
Yet his weight feels heavy in my heart
As my sadness continues to grow

    Allfather!
What fate has been given me?
    Why must I suffer?
Why must I feel this pain?
    Allfather!
Life has lost it's meaning to me
    I think I'm going insane!

I lay him down on a pyre
    A burial worthy a king
And as I lie down by his side
I hear the weaving Norns sing

The fate of Norns await us all
There is no way to escape
The day to answer Oden's call
    Or walk through hel's gate

The fate of Norns await us all
I know this to be true
It's time to answer Oden's call
My son, he calls for me and you!
