Interestingly enough, the original version of this song was inspired by a cowboy folk tale, less than a hundred years ago.

I am listening to the sounds of a violin. ..... My son started lessons this year, and the mornings with music/practice has been a wonderful thing to watch and listen to. Still too early to tell if he's going to take to it...but I love the sound, none the less.
