What is a dharmist?

JeroenJeroen Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterNetherlands Veteran

I came across a definition of a dharmist as “being one who studies the Buddha’s teachings, without being part of a sangha or calling themselves a Buddhist.” Apparently S. N. Goenka was one. I’d never heard of this before, but apparently some people don’t feel comfortable proclaiming themselves as Buddhists but want to have some term identifying them.

My guess is this word is serving as a translation maybe for dharmānusārī, which gets translated as "dharma follower," versus "faith follower," but I'm not sure of the applicability of these terms to laymen. In the "four people of the path" schema, these are immediately proceeding śrotāpanna/entry into the stream.

  • Tee hee.

You have probably never heard of anti-Buddha, aunty-Buddha (she raised him after he started his first and last life by matricide) ...
The term Buddhist is a recent meaningless Western term.
... nobody even knows what it means or averages out to
