  1. It doesn't matter whether one is physically beautiful or not; it does matter to be kind-hearted.

  2. It doesn't matter whether having a fair complexion or not; it does matter to have pure morality.*

  3. It doesn't matter whether one is rich or not; it does matter to possess a content mind.

  4. It doesn't matter whether anyone is good or bad; it does matter whether you are good.

  5. It doesn't matter whether one is happy with sense pleasures or not; it does matter to be happy with contemplation of the Dhamma

  6. It doesn't matter whether others acknowledge you or not; it does matter to acknowledge others' support, and repay one's debt of gratitude.

*"Fair complexion" - not sure about Burma but I notice in Thailand that fair skin is considered beautiful so maybe this is a reference to that?

    There seems to be a hidden question here, not just ‘what matters?’ but ‘why does it matter?’ These things do not seem to immediately concern the quest for enlightenment, so perhaps it is more about how to live a happy life?

    Interesting way the words are used.

    1. Physically beautiful... Is he referencing conforming to fashion and beauty trends or a healthy way of life mindful of consumption?
    2. You're probably right about that. It could also be referencing cleanliness but it actually makes me wonder more about number 1.
