Buddhism in todays music...

edited February 2007 in General Banter
...besides say the Beastie Boys (who have admitted to being Buddhist, see their song Bodhisattva Vow) what other modern day bands do you know of that have Buddhist themes?

I came upon one in the extreme metal genre called The Firstborn. They actually just put out a concept album based on the Tibetan Book Of Living And Dying.

Anyone else know of any? I heard a long time ago the band Live were Krishna's but not sure on that one.

I haven't heard of any and the news of the Beastie Boys was news to me, indeed!

Harrison held onto his Hindu beliefs for a very long time...

Oh... there was the Dharma Bums...

I just found out Tina Turner is a Buddhist.

    and Orlando Bloom

as far as celebs go so is... Keanu Reeves, Steven Seagal (yea right), Kate Bosworth, Leonard Cohen, Michael Stipe, J-Lo (what?), Uma Therman, Mark Wahlberg (huh?), Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys), Oliver Stone, Phil Jackson (NBA coach), ....

But anyway, I'd love to find out about more modern era bands that have buddhist overtones...

I also read, with a little skepticism, that Courtney Love has recently become a Buddhist in her quest for survival. That might make for an interesting album or two.

As for celebs, Sharon Stone claims she's a Buddhist. As far as Right Livelihood goes I don't know how well acting fits, but there you are.

Richard Gere has helped me out quite a bit. My new roomate is Catholic and so is her family, but they are a bit less open-minded than she. So it came as maybe a bit of a shock when they found out that I wasn't Christian. But when she told them that I was Buddhist, her mom was like, "Oh, like Richard Gere!". Now if Sean Connery would just become a neo-pagan, that would help out so many other friends I know.

The character Edina 'Eddy' Monsoon "played" a Buddhist in ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, which is not to say she really was. What did y'all think about her portrayal of a "binge-buddhist?" She really played the neurotic or the hypocrite. I thought it was funny.

The character was played by Jennifer Saunders, but I don't know whether she was in a band or even if she was a Buddhist.

The Beastie Boys and Cortney Love are a surprise, indeed; and I share Brigid's scepticism about Courtney- right speech and right action were not uppermost in her mind when she was being unspeakably rude and boorish to my wife when staying in the hotel where she works. I digress.

As far as Eastern influence in music is concerned, the only musicians I knew of were:
George Harrison and John Lennon, devotees of Hare Krishna and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Pete Townshend, who was influenced by Mehta Baba, and Tina Turner, who is a Nichiren Buddhist. As for other Buddhists, I have no knowledge at all.

His Holiness has also stated that he's not going to recognize any more Western tulkus because Westerners don't have the ability to appreciate them for what they are. All they do is gossip and kvetch about them.

    Here's One:

    http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2004/09/19/zen_and_the_art_of_slam_dancing?pg=full
In Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies & the Truth About Reality," published [in 2003] by Wisdom Books in Somerville, [Mass.,] Brad Warner tells a lively story of his odyssey from living as a punk rocker in rural Ohio to making B-grade Japanese horror flicks to becoming a Zen priest in Tokyo. A veteran of punk bands Zero Defex and Dementia 13, Warner has practiced zazen (the Zen term for "sitting meditation") for over 15 years, and a couple years ago received Shiho, or Dharma Transmission -- formal acknowledgment that he has attained the same enlightenment as the Buddha. "Dharma Punx" (HarperCollins), a 2003 memoir by Noah Levine that recently appeared in paperback, traces a similar trajectory, describing Levine's passage from a West Coast punk childhood to becoming a meditation teacher in the Theravada Buddhist tradition.

Good find Nirvana, you beat me to it!
"Hardcore Zen" is a brilliant book by the way - I'd happily recommend it to anyone.

I found a Dementia 13 track on a compilation CD I'd forgotten I had and it's not too bad.

Adding to the list - Maxi Jazz of "Faithless" is a Nichiren Buddhist as well.
For those that don't know, "Faithless" are a UK band making what I would term "intelligent dance music" and it was with them that Dido first came to fame (her brother Rolo is a member of the band).

Anyhow, one of their tracks, "Mass Destruction", contains these lyrics:

"My dad came into my room holding his hat
    I knew he was leaving,
he sat on my bed told me some facts, son.
I have a duty, calling on me
You and your sister be brave my little soldier
And don't forget all I told ya
Your the mister of the house now remember this
And when you wake up in the morning give ya momma a kiss
Then I had to say goodbye

In the morning woke momma with a kiss on each eyelid,
Even though I'm only a kid
    Certain things can't be hid
    Momma grabbed me
Held me like I was made of gold
But left her inner stories untold
I said, momma it will be alright
    When daddy comes home, tonight

    [CHORUS]

Whether long range weapon or suicide bomber
Wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether you're soar away sun or BBC 1
Misinformation is a weapon of mass destruc
You could a Caucasian or a poor Asian
Racism is a weapon of mass destruction
    Whether inflation or globalization
Fear is a weapon of mass destruction

Whether Halliburton or Enron or anyone
Greed is a weapon of mass destruction

We need to find courage, overcome
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction

    The skin under my chin
    is exploding, again.
I'm getting stress from some other children.
I'm holding it in, we taking sides, like a politician
an if I get friction we get to fightin.
I defend my dad he's the best of all men
an whatever he's doin he's doin the right thing.
Its frightenin but it makes me mad, why do all
of these people seem to hate my dad?
an if that ain't enough, now I've got these spots.
I go to sleep every night with my stomach in knots.
and whats more I can hear Mama next door
explore the radio for reports of war.
and all we ever seem to do is hide the tears,
seems Daddy been gone for years.
But he was right, now I'm geared up for the fight
an he would be proud of me if Daddy came home tonight.

    [CHORUS]

My story stops here, lets be clear
    This scenario is happening everywhere
And you ain't going to nirvana or farvana
You're coming right back here to live out your karma
With even more drama than previously, seriously
Just how many centuries have we been
waiting for someone else to make us free
    And we refuse to see
That people overseas suffer just like we
Bad leadership and ego's unfettered and free
Who feed on the people they're supposed to lead
I don't need good people to pray and wait
For the lord to make it all straight
There's only now, do it right.
Cos I don't want your daddy, leaving home tonight"

    Nirvana,

    Great list! Thanks!

I think they got Jennifer Lopez wrong though. I just read an article in which she stated that she wasn't interested in Scientology because she was a Catholic.

And one person they missed that I know of is Joni Mitchell.
