Hiking

edited March 2011 in General Banter
Hi Everyone,

A lot of members on our board, including myself, often bring up the desire to "get away from it all" or go on retreat. I thought I nice compromise for myself might be to do a hiking expedition. I'm considering spending a week or two on the Appalachian trial. I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with this kind of thing. Boring? Challenging? Inspiring? Worthwhile?

Just wondering... Thanks!

It's... an experience. A very unique experience. It is challenging in that it really tests what you are made of, but while hiking for that long you need to remember that you belong to nature just as much as a deer or a tree, somehow that thought gave me courage when I was scared, gave me strength when I was tired, and made it so I focused more on the actual environment around me instead of how rigorous the trek was.

    hope I helped.

Great idea. I have hiked much of the Appalachian Trail through Maryland and Virginia, sometimes alone, other times with friends. When alone I sort of meditated while I hiked. Found it emotionally very healthful.

There's plenty of info on this online, I'm sure, and in books. Check Amazon.

I haven't done it myself (only small pieces of it), but I live close by the AT, so if you're passing by the Catawba/McAfee Knob area in southern Virginia, give me a call!
  • I live in new england and have hiked the Appalachian trail extensively. Its unbelievable experience would definitely suggest it.
  • I haunt been there but I have hiked alot in the Rockies, and have done a 3 day backcountry backpacking trip in Glaciar National Park in Montana. I find hiking fun, relaxing and a great exercise. I'm sure that it is beautiful there and it sounds like a great idea.

If you are up for it, certainly do it. It'll be a great experience especially if you go solo. It's all but boring.
