What helped you?

edited March 2011 in Buddhism Basics
As I have stated before, I am a newbie. Buddhism came to me as I was lost in my school library and happened upon the religion section. I since have found myself head over heels in study and practice. I try to obtain my information from reputable sources but it can be difficult. I really enjoy reading so my question is.... What did you read(if you chose to read) when you were new to Buddhism. If you didn't read what other sources did you find to be helpful. I haven't chosen a school yet so all schools are welcome ^_^ I apologize I know there was a "what are you reading now?" thread but I wasn't sure it pertained to Buddhism literature etc. Thanks for your help!

  • Zen - Thich Nhat Hanh or Shunryu Suzuki
TB - Pema Chodron or Lama Surya Das
Theravadan - the Pali Canon or Mindfulness in Plain English (foreign name)
  • An English translation of the Dhammapada
Some Thich Nhat Hanh - His Short Stories

Also, this helped with Mindfulness meditation: http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma4/mpe. html
It's about 150pgs but a real easy read. Really outlines my meditation practice.
  • Thanks guys ^_^ I really want to learn as much as I can before I go to live on a monastery
  • If you know to what tradition the monastery belongs, you should become familiar with their more popular sutras. I find study of the sutras and commentaries of both Theravada and Mahayana to be a contemplative and meditative experience in and of itself.
  • I was thinking recently of entering a Theravada tradition
  • Stick to the pali sutras then. I'm less conversant with that literature, but I'm pretty sure that Dhamma Dhatu knows his stuff. You should PM him for some recomendations.

I actually read a travel/adventure book by a westerner who goes to asia with a buddhist monk. That was what got me into the practice, because the monk was portrayed as such an amazing character. I recommend the book to anyone, its called Bones of the Master.
