You could insert Buddha in there as well obviously, don't be offended you too..
if not reaching your potential is making you suffer, then he would simply smile and say "you still don't get it do you?"

At the least, Buddhism asks that we don't go out of our way to hurt people. The most that Buddhism demands is that we act with compassion in our dealings with others.
So you could be walking down the street, doo dee doo and there's two puppies abandoned in a box. Now you don't really want puppies (in fact you hate the smell of dog hair) but you certainly shouldn't ignore their neglected little flea infested bodies, especially since they are now sucking on your fingers and looking at you with teary innocent eyes that pierce your soul. So you take them home and wouldn't you know it! It turns out I am a dog person. er.... I mean you. You. This is your scenario.
You don't have to make it your mission to find and save every dog/person in the world. You don't have to awaken society to the plights of abandoned pets. Buddhism doesn't ask that we become heroes, or go out of our way to find things to fix. It just says that we'll feel better and we will make others feel better when we act with compassion as we go through life. So when you come across a situation in your life that requires action, do the right thing.
Some may think that the world is a mess. Then cleaning it up is similar to cleaning your room, you just do a little bit everyday, maybe start with the messes that are yours and before you know it, it will be clean.
Things hardly ever turn out how you intend, if at all, and if you put so much emotion in one event that MAY or MAY NOT happen, then you will most likely end up suffering. Sure chase that career, run after that notion of making it in a certain way of life, but expect it to be anything apart from what you desire.
This is not to say that you should stop doing things that are creative or whatever you want, just don't expect it to be what you expect, and do not expect it to make you truly fulfilled for any great length of time.
