Yoga

edited April 2011 in General Banter
Any of you guys do Yoga? Are there any simple exercises you could recommend I could do on my own at home. I want to try it out.

Do you find yoga improves your meditation practice in anyway?

I slouch a lot, do you know any good yoga exercise for that?

Thanks in advance :-)

I prefer Chi Gong, which I find, does help my meditation practice. The yoga positions are too uncomfortable (I guess that's the point), but I know people who find yoga very meditative.

    I love Yoga!
I do Yoga and Zen Meditation.
It does help my posture and improves meditation.
I use an app on Ipod Touch which I paid #3 dollars for.
It has videos, pictures and directions on how to do it correctly.

  • Check out some yoga "flows" on youtube. ("flows" are sequences of poses)

If you memorize a flow and can do it in a solitary and quiet place I think it can be meditative in the same way walking meditation is.

However, if you try to do yoga at the local gym, you may find it too distracting: Loud music, straining to see the teacher, struggling to learn the pose, attractive people in provocative outfits and poses, etc. If you can overcome these things, though, that's great.

Either way it's a good workout and it's fun. So I highly recommend it.
  • To fix slouching walk with swagger. Like you are a badass mofo with a lot to offer. And sit with your back straight like you're a military man. That's how you can fix slouching.

I've done lots of yoga, and one quote that stayed with me from one of the female members here is that her mom did a lot of yoga for many, many years, and that the main thing she saw is that Buddhism changes people far more than yoga does. And I completely agree with that. Buddhism and psychology will do a lot more beneficial things for you over Yoga.

I knew a yoga monk for a while that claimed to be enlightened. I learned a lot of interesting things from him. But the main thing I learned was that even though he claimed to be enlightened he was way too uptight. He lacked patience and was a bit bigoted. He didn't like people questioning his ideas, even the ones that sounded like nonsense. Most good Buddhists react well when you question and challenge them. That's something the Buddha encouraged to not so easily accept everything if it didn't sound right.

Yoga is simply stretching exercises with a face lift. It use to be called PT when I went to school. I now do Hatha Yoga.

Yoga or simply stretching is excellent exercise for many reasons. It keeps muscles supple and flexive, aids breathing and digestion and relieves headaches - to name a few. It also helps with adopting proper meditative pose and helps concentrate the mind when you are meditating.

Avoid jerking - that is a no no. All stretching should be done slowly while breathing normally and held for some 10 - 15 seconds and relaxed. There are many good books on the subject.
  • I picked up a yoga dvd awhile ago. I noticed that it really helps with back pain, and gives you a sense of calm.
If you want to fix slouching, roll your shoulders back and use your abs to support your upper body.
  • I started Prana yoga to calm a the side effects of a lung infection. Worked wonders. I would reccommend trying to find something that will compliment and health issues you may have then you will be able to see optimum benefits!

Also if you meet a good teacher, you can see if they blend meditation into the practice.

Not at all - unless you are addicted to drugs.
