Handmade knots?

edited April 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Hi there. I'm new, and I have my own spiritual revelations and exponential growth that's lead me to Buddhism among other things, but I really don't talk much unless asked so I hope it's okay if I don't offer up my history; it seems kind of irrelevant.

For what it's worth I'm drawn to Tibetan Buddhism and meditation on death, but I'm waiting until I find a teacher to start that particular wing of meditations. In the meantime I'm starting at the beginning, and I have a question: Has ANYONE ever hand-done one of the more complex knots on a mala? Not a snakeknot or an Endless knot, but perhaps a dharmachakra knot or something along those lines?

I'm making a mala on Friday and I would like, though it is obviously not necessary, to have one such on my mala, but I can't find directions anywhere to practice.

Any help or comment is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • Hmm, that looks crazy complicated, I can help with an endless knot, how how to put a tassel on that you've made but that is about it. Sorry! Hopefully someone knows here. XD
    Best of Luck :)

  • All I can suggest is to go to your nearest Chinatown, if there is one anywhere in your area, and see if someone in the shops can make a knot for you. It's a fine art.
  • I can tie a square knot
  • Federica, I've actually seen that thread, it was what lead me here. ;) Compassionate reminds me of a good point, though; I'd be best off getting someone who knows the art to do it. That sounds like a sound idea, thank you all.

Oh we're full of good ideas here, but if you want to really know how to tie knots, join a rebirth thread.
    Or a Self/Not-self thread.
    Or any thread discussing Kamma.

You should be all tied up in knots, in no time!!
