  • I have only ever heard of it twice, once a long long time ago when the librarian of my school who happens to be my mothers friend was at our house with her husband. They are both spiritualists, yet I am unsure to what religion if any they belong to. I am also unsure to exactly what it is. I have also heard it spoken of in another thread, can you elaborate on exactly what it involves..

A way of concentrating a part of our conscious energy into and along other parts of energy waves outside of our body energy. Since energy is all around and within us, I think its possible to sort of "dance" our way from energy or particle to particle throughout our surroundings and universe. I think its something that is usually entertaining, but not truly advancing. I see it as magical and expansive. I think its very risky, and probably difficult to master especially without a proper teacher. One quote I've heard though, "True magic is overcoming a negative emotion" which often brings me back to where I should be focusing my mind on.
  • I believe it's a true supernatural power that does not help with Buddhist cultivation.

That's why it's under "General Banter". Topics that don't relate to Buddhist cultivation are discussed here.

I had a Chinese-American friend who suddenly spontaneously started having astral projection experiences. It scared her, as this ability came on suddenly and unexpectedly, and she didn't know what it was. She spoke to her older brother about it, and he let her in on the family secret: Her father, brother and now, she, had this gift. The maternal side of the family didn't, so clearly it was hereditary. The father was adopted as a child in China, so there was no way to find out his background (meaning: did he come from a family of healers or shamans, or whatever). After hearing her testimony, I had no doubt astral projection is "real".

Furthermore, on another thread, Tom presents a scientific article that seems to explain how astral projection is possible. Consciousness is independent of the brain and is capable of leaving the brain. People who do astral projection are able to will their consciousness to leave their bodymind, apparently. Sometimes it happens spontaneously. Check out the article on Tom's NDE thread.

    why is this on general?!
in buddhism it is called mind-made body, but it is basically the same concept.

    quote from the Samañaphala Sutra:

    "The Mind-made Body

With his mind thus concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, he directs and inclines it to creating a mind-made body. From this body he creates another body, endowed with form, made of the mind, complete in all its parts, not inferior in its faculties. Just as if a man were to draw a reed from its sheath. The thought would occur to him: 'This is the sheath, this is the reed. The sheath is one thing, the reed another, but the reed has been drawn out from the sheath.' (...) In the same way — with his mind thus concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, the monk directs and inclines it to creating a mind-made body. From this body he creates another body, endowed with form, made of the mind, complete in all its parts, not inferior in its faculties.

This, too, great king, is a fruit of the contemplative life, visible here and now, more excellent than the previous ones and more sublime."
  • I'm learning astral projection right now in an 8 week course from a Gnostic mystic. From what I experienced so far, it is a very real phenomenon that isn't imagined. Basically it's an out of body experience where you're in control of a lucid dream. A dream where you know you're dreaming, that is a lucid dream.

The beginner stage begins with you learning how to relax your body completely and enter that lucid dream state without falling asleep. Then once you become good at that, there is a whole other physical process of actually leaving your body and that is where you can see the other dimension or "the spirit realm".

So Astral Projection is like a lucid dream, but to get to the very next level by actually leaving your body. You know you're no longer in your body once you do it right, there might be vibrations, popping sensations, your heart racing, or other sensations before you actually are able to basically see that other dimension. My teacher claims it's not dangerous, that it is a myth that you can be stuck there.

As for the "practical" uses of astral projection it's fun to learn once you realize the proper way to do it. And once you are able to easily travel that other dimension you can interact with the entities there. But I'm still a beginner I haven't got to that point yet of even meeting the entities but it's fun learning, we'll see what happens.

You guys are blowing me away! :hair:

So, Vincenzi, do you think this should be under "Advanced Ideas"? Does the sutra say what the purpose of this exercise is?

Leon, you sound as if this were as mundane as a cup of tea. Did you learn this somewhere, or does it happen spontaneously?

lol maybe confusing astral projection with dreaming? but then again is there really a difference between you dreaming and thinking? i used to day dream all the time. one could assert that day dreaming/night dreaming is all astral projection.

on another note, i have done what seems to be astral projection, though i could of mistaken it for a very clear lucid dream.
for me i lay awake and my body goes to sleep. from there i bring my attention towards my heart chakra and bring energy towards the throat and then to the third eye. from there one can gain enough momentum to kind of force the astral body out of the physical. in a way its kind of like you're strapped down and you can only move your muscles. so what happens is that from the third eye there is a small almost white looking dot in the middle of my vision. from there i just push on forward with my chest, throat and third eye into a tunnel. once out of the tunnel i can float around in a reality that somewhat looks like the normal reality but in a way is like a blueprint of the normal reality.

i tried walking around my house. interacting with my brother who is always on the computer downstairs. look at mirrors. float up and go through walls. actually touch physical objects.

in a way it happens quite randomly at times and rarely do i get the intention to do it.

but again this might just be lucid dreaming. though it does have a different flair than lucid dreaming.

    meh.
  • If people here do believe in this, what I will say from my own study is that you could open up the flood gates to a whole host of negative energies or entities.

By study I literally mean study of text and others experiences - None of my own.
  • If you're a positive person that is always trying to improve and you're optimistic already CosmicGypsy then spirits will not be able reign havoc on your life. This only happens when people are very afraid of them, and already have a lot of problems to begin with that make them think negative all the time.

So then the spirits begin to feast on that negative energy, and they begin to want more of it. The theory is that if you project that you want good things in your life and that you have upbeat energy that is probably what you will get more of. Spirits may actually sometimes interfere to get more of the type of energy you're projecting to begin with.

And if you don't want to interact with spirits at all. I assure you that by ignoring them completely and acting like they don't exist, they will either leave you alone or won't bother you much.

spirits are empty. they are nothing but your mental projections. the only power they have is the power you give them.
see the illusion that you project and give it love and compassion.

    lol bring on the spirits.
