I had a Chinese-American friend who suddenly spontaneously started having astral projection experiences. It scared her, as this ability came on suddenly and unexpectedly, and she didn't know what it was. She spoke to her older brother about it, and he let her in on the family secret: Her father, brother and now, she, had this gift. The maternal side of the family didn't, so clearly it was hereditary. The father was adopted as a child in China, so there was no way to find out his background (meaning: did he come from a family of healers or shamans, or whatever). After hearing her testimony, I had no doubt astral projection is "real".
Furthermore, on another thread, Tom presents a scientific article that seems to explain how astral projection is possible. Consciousness is independent of the brain and is capable of leaving the brain. People who do astral projection are able to will their consciousness to leave their bodymind, apparently. Sometimes it happens spontaneously. Check out the article on Tom's NDE thread.
in buddhism it is called mind-made body, but it is basically the same concept.
quote from the Samañaphala Sutra:
"The Mind-made Body
With his mind thus concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, he directs and inclines it to creating a mind-made body. From this body he creates another body, endowed with form, made of the mind, complete in all its parts, not inferior in its faculties. Just as if a man were to draw a reed from its sheath. The thought would occur to him: 'This is the sheath, this is the reed. The sheath is one thing, the reed another, but the reed has been drawn out from the sheath.' (...) In the same way — with his mind thus concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, the monk directs and inclines it to creating a mind-made body. From this body he creates another body, endowed with form, made of the mind, complete in all its parts, not inferior in its faculties.
This, too, great king, is a fruit of the contemplative life, visible here and now, more excellent than the previous ones and more sublime."
The beginner stage begins with you learning how to relax your body completely and enter that lucid dream state without falling asleep. Then once you become good at that, there is a whole other physical process of actually leaving your body and that is where you can see the other dimension or "the spirit realm".
So Astral Projection is like a lucid dream, but to get to the very next level by actually leaving your body. You know you're no longer in your body once you do it right, there might be vibrations, popping sensations, your heart racing, or other sensations before you actually are able to basically see that other dimension. My teacher claims it's not dangerous, that it is a myth that you can be stuck there.
As for the "practical" uses of astral projection it's fun to learn once you realize the proper way to do it. And once you are able to easily travel that other dimension you can interact with the entities there. But I'm still a beginner I haven't got to that point yet of even meeting the entities but it's fun learning, we'll see what happens.
So, Vincenzi, do you think this should be under "Advanced Ideas"? Does the sutra say what the purpose of this exercise is?
I have done many Astral Projections and Astral Travels and even Astral Sex.
But I will say this... Who knows???
Leon, you sound as if this were as mundane as a cup of tea. Did you learn this somewhere, or does it happen spontaneously?
on another note, i have done what seems to be astral projection, though i could of mistaken it for a very clear lucid dream.
for me i lay awake and my body goes to sleep. from there i bring my attention towards my heart chakra and bring energy towards the throat and then to the third eye. from there one can gain enough momentum to kind of force the astral body out of the physical. in a way its kind of like you're strapped down and you can only move your muscles. so what happens is that from the third eye there is a small almost white looking dot in the middle of my vision. from there i just push on forward with my chest, throat and third eye into a tunnel. once out of the tunnel i can float around in a reality that somewhat looks like the normal reality but in a way is like a blueprint of the normal reality.
i tried walking around my house. interacting with my brother who is always on the computer downstairs. look at mirrors. float up and go through walls. actually touch physical objects.
in a way it happens quite randomly at times and rarely do i get the intention to do it.
but again this might just be lucid dreaming. though it does have a different flair than lucid dreaming.
meh.
By study I literally mean study of text and others experiences - None of my own.
So then the spirits begin to feast on that negative energy, and they begin to want more of it. The theory is that if you project that you want good things in your life and that you have upbeat energy that is probably what you will get more of. Spirits may actually sometimes interfere to get more of the type of energy you're projecting to begin with.
And if you don't want to interact with spirits at all. I assure you that by ignoring them completely and acting like they don't exist, they will either leave you alone or won't bother you much.
see the illusion that you project and give it love and compassion.
lol bring on the spirits.
