What is the Hanmi School?

I was reading about Tibetan Buddhism on wikipedia and the article, in passing, mentioned the Chinese Hanmi school. Does anyone have information on it? Are there any Hanmi buddhists on this forum?

(Edited out. I posted the link you probably read. If you Google "Hanmi Buddhism" there's a link. There is also one for Hanmi Aikido and even one for a Hanmi Bank. Go figure.)

It appears to be Chinese Vajrayana focusing mainly on Medicine Buddha.
  • I have no idea whether posting links to school websites is appropriate, but a google search actually brings up their website.

Yeah, I actually did one the day I posted this. I just wanted opinions on the school and some info from people who study it.
  • From personal experience I would say be very wary of anything to do with this group. The main aim is to charge big fees for teachings and empowered items, the teachers do not have more than a few months experience and seem more concerned with their on egos than the dharma. Members follow a chinese buddhist by the name of Dechan Jueren, whom they refer to as Master, groups also go by the name of Darai Rulai Temple, both in USA & UK.

After the Japan earthquake they were selling "anti-radiation masks" for £300 each, I think that tells you what kind of organisation this is.
  • Diane47 do you have personal experience of your claimings?
  • Yes, with the UK group, that is why I said from personal experience. Attended their meditation buddha workshop and other events, I've also met Dan Kendall, abbott of the LA temple. Just join their mailing list on the Wisdom 36 website if you want more info.
  • Was the money issue or lack of wisdom in their behalf that drew you away from the School? I would really like to hear your story...
  • Both really, charging high fees when they really don't have enough experience to teach others. 3 months training in China doesn't make someone a Vajracharya. Also the act of taking refuge seems more focused on paying homage to Dechan Jueren rather than the traditional 3 jewels, at this point they become students of "master" and are given robes to wear when teaching.

Does anyone else on the forum have any experience of this?
  • From what I heard from a friend who is involved in the school, Dechan is the Hanmi school, a spiritual leader so it is logical to take refuge to him for he is a living Buddha...
  • Is your friend a student of Dechan? How does he feel about the practices of the school. The whole lineage / living buddha story for this guy is a work of fiction, but people seem to be taken in by the claims of some kind of fast track to enlightenment and wealth, the whole personal greed thing(be it spiritual or material) seems to attract people to the Hanmi School / Darai Rulai temple.
  • Well I understand that you have really strong objections about this particular 'school', but what I wonder is how did you get involved with the Hanmi school and participated in their courses in the first place...? :p
