The Karma Kagyus basic gradual path, Lam Rim, text is the Jewel Ornament of Liberation by Gampopa. A good comprehensive book by Sogyal Rinpoche is The Tibetan Book of the Living and Dying, which is different from the book of the dead. Sogyal said that he included everything in it for posterity.

Theres a Mahayana Canon of Sutras. I am not sure if they are as available on the web as the Theravadan Pali Canon. The diamond, heart, lotus, and surangama sutras are available on the web. Those are good ones. I think the lotus is kinda long and boring.
  • Shantideva's "The Bodhisattva Way of Life" is recommended by the Dalai Lama as a basic text. It's a guide for living with the precepts and the commitment to compassion for others.

No big words and thick volumes, but good explainations of how it all relates to living a normal life.
