Martial Arts and Meditation

edited May 2011 in Meditation
I started Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido about two months ago. I have noticed that the martial arts helps me so much wtih my meditation practice. Its almost like one long zen moment from start of class to finish. I find that I lose track of time, I am completely mindful and I have so much more focus now that it has somewhat been incorperated into my home meditation practice. I love it. Any one else experience this?

My teacher says there is no such thing as "martial arts" without meditation, and I agree with him. Everyone in my dojo practices this way.

Hi I wouldn't say it happens all the time, but the physical mindfulness in martial arts is a great compliment to meditation.
  • The first person to inspire my interest in meditation and subsequently dharma was a martial art practitioner who had achieved a black belt ( rhee tae kwondo - here in Adelaide, Australia ) in martial arts - at the time I was a practising Catholic and my thoughts on getting to know him were that his behaviour was more Christian than most Christians I had met .... this was the beginning point for me
