Going to Thailand

edited May 2011 in General Banter
I will be travelling to Thailand (and some other undecided placed yet) in August. Any tips? I have read some thing about "fake monks" and actually encountered a few in Hong Kong. Anything in particular to watch out for?

After living there for a year and a half, and visiting there dozens of times before that (two months most years), I never once met a fake monk. I doubt that will be an issue for you.

    Any other specific questions?

Just getting back to your question about fake monks in Thailand. If a monk approached you on the street...be very suspicious. Basically, that just doesn't happen. Twenty or thirty years ago, when there was a much greater curiosity about Westerners, particularly Americans, maybe. I can only think of one time that happened to me on the street...well, actually on a ferry...and I was invited to an off-the-beaten path temple. But aside from that...I doubt you'd encounter that.

Even when visiting temples, it's very unlikely to happen.
