Question Concerning Pride

edited May 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Ok.

So I'm working on updating my resume. And as im working on it I get the influx of positive feelings. More like warmth in my abdominal area.

I feel good about the effort and work im putting into my resume. This moment feels good. I'm happy with how i'm spending my time and what I've produced. I feel good sure.

Once this moment is over and the task completed, it will be as if this moment never happened, who cares, lets move on, all is history.

I'm happy with the work I've done and what has been accomplished.

If someone comes in and praises what I have done, I don't really care.
If someone comes in and criticizes what I have done, I don't really care.

So what is it that I'm experiencing if not pride?

I don't think it's pride (another word for "ego"), because you're able to let go, and your non-attachment is demonstrated by the fact that you don't care about praise or criticism. So, don't over-worry it. You're doing fine. :)
  • Is it not easy enough to know pride from other emotions? There's an awful lot of these threads, and I can't help but thinking; where are the threads about "Am I angry?", "Am I happy?", "Am I sad?", "Am I disappointed?" etc.

You can be happy with the work you do. There's a big difference between being happy (maybe even proud) of one's work and being stuck up in it.
The total annihilation of self - thereby all feelings good and bad - are for monks only, who need not navigate in the "real" world and deal with the expectations the rest of us are met with :) (imho)
  • If someone were to tear up your work, and you became furious and retaliated with violence, that would be because your pride was hurt. If they did that and you did not feel the need to use violence to communicate to them your that the work was important to you, then it's not pride.

Being pleased with what you've accomplished - without being attached to it or using it to self-inflate your ego - is fine. You should be proud of your accomplishments. Just don't lord them over others, but use them for the good of yourself and others. I'm enormously proud of what I've accomplished so far, but it's only relevant to my own self. What I've accomplished is irrelevant to others. I use what I've done to my own benefit and (hopefully) for the benefit of many other people in the years to come. Sadly, in my chosen profession there are a lot of people who see their accomplishments as granting them superiority to others. I like to take what I've learned and pass it on to make everyone better at it.

Congrats on the updated resume! :)

I think the warmth you describe arises when we focus our intent on something that is truly needed, by ourselves and others. We work with that need as best we can and let go.

Pride is quiet when the self is quiet... because there's noone to be proud, nothing to be proud of, no container that holds it, and nothing to pull your mind backwards towards a need already tended.
  • If you are lauding yourself and disparaging others, thinking: "My resume is better than any body else's, and I deserve special praise." That is pride. However, from what you are describing, it simply sounds as if you are having a good time in making your resume. And you know what? Good. If you can enjoy life by doing something as simple as making a resume, then your practicing the teachings of Buddha correctly. Keep going, friend. :)
  • You are doing so well and as said above if u try to just live in the present moment
in no time ull be able to witness your improvement in all aspects !!wish u good luck!!
