Free Buddhism course via email

edited June 2011 in Buddhism Basics
I've subscribed to a "Basic Buddhism: A Home Study Course". I receive an email about every few weeks with a lesson attached. There are 10 lessons in total. It's written by Shifu Nagaboshi Tomio & Christmas Humphries.

I wonder if anyone has heard of this course or, the authors? It seems to be straight forward, easy for a beginner to understand while covering a host of topics. But with so many scam artists out there I'm always a little careful to jump on any bandwagon! This course is free but donations are accepted.

I haven't heard about Nagaboshi, but the name Christmas Humphreys rings a bell - he was an important person in the beginnings of Buddhism in Britain - founded the Buddhist Society and wrote some books. But that's about as much as I know. More here:

    and on Wikipedia.

I received lesson 1 immediately after requesting the course. Approximately one per week for ten weeks. Looking forward to it.

    Looks like an interesting course.
  • I signed up for this course and read through the first lesson. I'm looking forward to the upcoming lessons. I know so very little about Buddhism and it's a tad overwhelming. This seems like a good place to start.

    Thanks for the link. :)
  • I've read through the first four lessons since the time of the original post and, to my inexperienced eye, it appears legit and the lessons are written out well. Comparing to what I already know, all the lessons seem objective and doesn't necessarily (from what I've seen) side from any particular school of thought but truly gives you the barebone basics of Buddhism.

Still new to Buddhism, I give it a thumbs up. It covers a lot of stuff I already knew but also explains them in a wait that I can actually UNDERSTANd -- it's "noob friendly" as it were.

Call me a cheater, call me impatient, but I got through the first four lessons so quickly because I looked them up on Scribd -- someone was nice enough to upload the lessons and share them. As the lessons were free I didn't think this would be a problem; the only thing anyone would actually be hurting themselves on by looking it up this way would be the exercises which were clearly designed for the student to practice throughout the week until the next lessons arrived.
