Would you assume someone with the last name St. Pierre to be Christian?

edited July 2011 in General Banter
What do you think about someone with that last name, and them not being Christian? Are there many other clearly christian last names like St. Pierre?

  • Names are just names, and don't imply anything about the person whose name it is, except that there may have been significance back in history. Names like Cartwright, that indicate a profession. You wouldn't expect Mr. Wheelwright and his sons to be making wagonwheels, would you? Would anyone with the last name of Fox still pray to the Fox totem? Ancient history.
  • will you expect someone with the name Jesus to be christian?

Actually, doesn't the Jesus name, along with "Mesias" (Messiah) and other similar names usually get applied in Catholic countries? So the answer to your question, Vincenzi, would be "yes". On the other hand, no one would automatically expect people with other Biblical names: Seth, Peter, Mark, Matthew, etc. to be Christian, would they?

  • I would assume them, or at least their family, to have a Christian background. I would not assume they themselves to be Christian.

same here and that was my point :)

it is more about background... my two names are of biblical saints, but I'm buddhist.
