Origin of delusion

Why would delusion ever have arisen in the first place?

If time is a delusion an answer can't be given in terms of time.

So what do we say?

  • What sort of delusion are you referring to? The loss of perception of the true nature of reality? That happens with the conditioning to the material life that starts in infancy. As soon as a child is born, parents and family members surround the baby with distracting toys and begin the process of conditioning the child to the mundane world, taking attention away from what it experienced in the bardo. Some children are able to remember details of past lives and a connection to Spirit in the earliest years, but after age 6, all is forgotten, and they are fully inducted into the dominant society's view of reality.

for some reason, this reminds me of the movie The Invention of Lying. i feel like somewhere along the lines, someone made up a story to explain the basic questions that man always asks (where do i come from? why am i here? what's going to happen to me when i die? etc), and then everyone else just believed the story... it gets carried through generations... and eventually, it's been around so long that nobody remembers who or where it came from, but they figure they should believe it because they don't have a better answer.

ignorance is not, not knowing. ignorance is false knowledge/assumption/belief/interpretation/information.

get rid of your ignorance and see clearly. when you see clearly there is what is. from that what is arises wisdom.

so one could say to dwell in not knowing for a while, and out of that mystery and openness will arise "true knowing".

    hehe
  • Ignorance doesn't really exist it only appears to exist. Why? Ignorance. Which doesn't really exist it only appears to exist. Why? Ignorance. Which doesn't really exist ...
  • Maybe why is a bad question.

what does 'why' mean? For example why am I sitting on a chair? Does why imply volition? Why is it sunny today? Because there is no cloud. Why is there ignorance? Because the buddha nature is distorted? Why is the buddha nature distorted?

Perhaps due to evolution? Why would ignorance evolve? Survival? Why would ignorance help survival?

Maybe the answer is that because the first worm with a ganglia was ignorant. And now we are evolving to less ignorance..

Delusion is brought about by ignorance. Ignorance is not-knowing. Not-knowing is lack of wisdom. Lack of wisdom is the state of things when one(mind) has not experienced the true state of life.

There is no first cause to ignorance except life itself (the cause of not knowing to read is simply not having learned/been-taught), just as there is no first cause to aging except being born (no first cause to "change" itself). Time moves this and that inexorably toward the realization of the true state of things by awareness, and release from delusion-wrought bonds and suffering, though there is no one and no thing that is in bondage.
