  • Hi girllikesam, I studied web development about 10 years ago but by the end of the course had decided it wasn't the career for me lol. I studied in both server-side and client-side aspects of web development - the courses you've linked to focus on client-side. So I guess it depends what type of work interests you more - the techie server-side programming aspect which tends to appeal to detailed-oriented analytical/mathematical types, or the front-end stuff which while still technical is more front-end graphical. Not sure which role is in more demand these days although with the broadcaster I work for I hear web developers (server-side) tend to get paid more and are harder to find. That said you should do what you enjoy most. Experienced Flash developers for e.g. also seem to be in demand. And on another but related career stream SEO experts are also highly sought after!

Average days work for our designers? Well they work with/to Technical Project Managers(who are often ex-designers themselves who have chosen to move into a management role after a time) who give them their high level requirements, often documented in specifications or briefs. The designers then might do wireframes (hand-drawn or very basic non-interactive designs) of the web pages, get them reviewed by the team or client, then eventually move onto actually constructing them ie coding, implementing content management systems etc. Some companies have full-time wireframe desigers who do that though, and the client-side web developers just do the construction and coding.

Lots of people I know in web design are self-trained however if you have the means to study formally then go for it. If you're not totally sure about it as a career I'd try googling sites that have online tutorials in things web mark-up languages, client-side scripting etc and try them out, see if it's your thing. Download a trial version of Flash and have a go developing a basic website. That kind of thing.

    Good luck!

  • @Tiap what did you end up doing for a job Tia?
  • My sister's partner does web design full time (from home). The problem I see with it is that she's good, so she ends up working 24 hours a day. She makes okay money I guess, but she puts in (to my way of thinking) far too many hours to earn it. There are lots of different ways to make a living in that business, but you have to be really good.
  • I ended up being a software designer for several years (loved that) then purely by chance fell into broadcasting/TV of all things. Now I'm kind of trying to fall out of it lol :)
