Tea

edited August 2011 in General Banter
Yes. Tea.

Any thoughts? I tend to have a coffee in the morning but have realised I'm becoming sensitive to caffeine. I'm just starting to meditate again after a few years break so I'm looking at alternatives. So tea. Any favorites? Yes some have caffeine in but still like to hear peoples thoughts.

Green tea. Heard it has basically the same effect as coffee.
  • Green tea and black tea are the same plant, just harvested at different times and processed differently.
  • I love tea, never drink coffee. I think that most of the time the caffeine is less in tea but someone can correct me. A good black tea is a great first step, you can drink it just like coffee with sugar and cream or plain. There are also many decaff teas available. In my experience I REALLY love spicy tea like chai with a lot of milk and sugar. Yum. Earl Grey is another one that just smells so amazing in the morning. There is now white tea that is another time that tea is harvested and treated different than green or black tea. It has a much milder flavor.

Just a note, for black tea your water should be hot, boiling hot, to release all the good tes stuff. For green and white tea the water should be hot but not as hot as black tea.
  • I love sencha and genmaicha the most! :) Flavored tea can also be nice. AHeerdt's advice about the water is spot on! :p I've had green tea and coffee and for me they are totally different. I get really jittery on coffee, but not tea. That's part of the reason why I like it more. If you want tea w/o caffeine then I'd suggest rooibos. I have some buttercream rooibos from Adagio tea that I like a lot. :)
  • You can get decaffeinated green or black tea. Herbal tea is naturally decaffeinated. I like milk and sugar in tea. For herbal tea its nice to have chamomile with some lemon zest added.

So what, then, is white tea?

  • white tea is in an earlier stage than green. Both green and white are less oxidized. When it oxidizes it is black. White and green tea are sources of antioxidants but by the time its black all of those anti oxidants are oxidized and don't work anymore.

An antioxidant works by taking one for the team. The AO gets oxidized instead of something in the body tissue.
  • I just wanted to say thanks to you all. It almost sounds like a daft subject but still prominent in the Buddhist World.

Chai could very well be my alternative to morning Coffee. I've tried it the past two days and seems nice. I describe it as "Christmas in a cup" :D

Chai is so awesome! I tend to be lazy though and use a concentrate. The Tazo one is excellent! Cold or hot, that stuff is what brought me to tea.
White tea, I've noticed, is also more expensive. I don't really care for it because I've only had very vegetal tasting ones. But I'd recommend trying it. I just remembered this morning that matcha might be something you'd like. It's pretty out there flavor wise. But it's ground green tea leaves that you mix with water. It's pretty tasty as a latte. :)
  • I can heartily recommend fennel tea. It has a nice mild, slightly aniseed taste and it's great for the digestion.

In fact, I am going to go and make one now!
