There will probably always be horrific things happening somewhere or other in the world.
As Buddhists we need to meditate and to practice Dhamma diligently so that we will have less delusion and conflicting emotions ... and also try to be kind and compassionate and good examples of the principles we uphold. We will then perhaps be better able to be of genuine benefit to others ourselves.

There is a Buddhist practice of studying the decaying remains of humans in order to gain insight into impermanence of the body I believe. The purpose is not to horrify. I think that one needs to be an advanced student to benefit from it. For me horrible images stick with me and do more harm than any possible good. Best to avoid them. Today in Canada we buried a well loved and prominent politician. I was deeply moved by listening to his funeral service on the radio. He was considered by all to be a wonderful human. Very inspiring.

Hi Alex and Dazzle .... wise words for you here from Dazz, Alex and further from Ajahn Sumedho, about how best to focus our attention and energy - as Dazz has said rather than suggesting the best way forward is not to care about animal cruelty, acceptance that bad things will probably always happen, allows us to use our skills and time here in productive ways.

We are conscious, intelligent beings with retentive memory. We have language. Over the past several thousand years, we have developed reason, logic and discriminative intelligence. What we must do is figure out how to use these capacities as tools for realisation of Dhamma rather than as personal acquisitions or personal problems. People who develop their discriminative intelligence often end up turning it upon themselves; they become very self-critical and even begin to hate themselves. This is because our discriminative faculties tend to focus upon what is wrong with everything. That is what discrimination is about: seeing how this is different from that. When you do that to yourself, what do you end up with? Just a whole list of flaws and faults that make you sound absolutely hopeless.

When we are developing Right Understanding, we use our intelligence for reflection and contemplation of things. We also use our mindfulness and wisdom together. So now we are using our ability to discriminate with wisdom (vijja) rather than with ignorance (avijja). This teaching of the Four Noble Truths is to help you to use you intelligence - your ability to contemplate, reflect and think - in a wise way rather than in a self-destructive, greedy or hateful way.

  • @StoicBuddhistAlex I notice the "Stoic" in your username. You might want to consider the following from the Stoic Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius:

"Not easily will you find a person who is unhappy due to ignorance of what goes on in another person's soul; but those who do not follow the movements of their own soul will surely be unhappy." (Meditations, Book 2:8)

We all know that mankind is capable of great evil; why dwell on it? What is accomplished by subjecting yourself to such horrific images? In so far as it has diminished your good feelings toward humanity and increased your feelings of bitterness, you have harmed yourself. I think Robot has it right: avoid dwelling on such evil things and instead place your attention on things that serve to uplift and inspire.

People are driven by the strong attachment to their deluded minds these are the real enemies of sentient being. Not people but delusions.
Without delusions there would be no cause of harm for animals or any other being to inflict upon theirselves or upon others. Imagine that everyone has eradicated anger, Hatred, attachment, Ignorance...then what reason would one have to harm another ?

Yes sentient beings are sick they are suffering with deluded minds, But if we develop anger toward them we are indulging in this sickness ourselves and so we shall never be able to help others over come such adversity if we do not first develop wisdom minds that recognise the way things are in Samsara.

If we develop the intention to harm our own delusions instead of other beings then we shall swiftly become a much better person.
  • Very bad Karma..
  • People are cruel, bad kamma is generated, etc. We've pretty well established those as facts. And if you think people are cruel to animals, try living in Somalia or any of a hundred other places on earth.
  • I think a good question its why did u see it...
    how that negativity arose..
    how to leave that state.

With the risk of sounding like an ignorant ->
Have you seen how humans torture other humans and other animals?
Yes, and read about it. There's nothing to be shocked about. Only the form of torture may shock me.
Humanity seems to be a killing machine who enjoys evil.
Yes. Humans have virus-like mentality. Violence is their primary , instinctual way of getting something they want really bad. Or to prove who's the boss.
But, among other animals, humans also like violence. And use it as a way of having fun. Finished reading Quo Vadis these days, and I kinda wondered how could the masses enjoy ongoing bloodbaths in the Colosseum. How, even if inside their own minds were disgusted, still liked the slaughter of other beings.(maybe the free bread they got at their free circus made them that way).
I'm very negative after watching a video of a puppy being burn alive.
I don't want to see it either. I don't want to go to sleep knowing that a fragile being was burned alive. As a future vet, I should tough up, and kinda get used to this kind of images.
I don't Know if this breaks rules in the forum and if it breaks it im sorry.
At least you warned us about what we were going to watch, so I decided not to watch.
But buddhist how can this happen!!!?
It simply happens. And you can't do anything about it right now. People with lots of free time, bored to hell, and with lots of 'ingenious' ideas would come up with burning a puppy alive.
The thing is, that we can't control how people think. You can't beat respect for life into human beings who are built ( maybe I'm wrong) as sadistic maniacs, who only feel good when they burn, torture, even kill another being.

I've seen kids and even normal adults going to work, or coming home from work on the streets of my village where I currently live throwing stones ( small sized) at a medium sized, mostly peaceful dog ( who is kind of ignored by his drunkard owner) out of no reason. And not just one stone. They were like machine-gunning the poor dog. After they went away, I would give a piece of bread to the dog.

All I want to say is, that people, even innocent kids, would come up with (instinctual) ideas of inflicting pain on...nearly anything that moves and breathes air.

Thankfully there are also acts of great beauty and generosity every day otherwise the world would be exactly as you see it.

Just watched that for the first time. The people whom burnt that poor thing alive have created the causes to burn in one of the hells for a very long time.

    Hi Alex,

If humans were "pure evil" there'd be no Buddhism.

I did not click the link, the description alone is heartbreaking :bawl: I'd prefer not to see links to these kinds of shock videos on this forum. I think it would be more productive to focus on the good things in life, instead of on extreme negativity and sadness.
