Modern Buddhism...has it really come to this?

It puts me in mind of what you might get if Buddhism and Christianity were people and you genetically spliced them.

Rule 27: When a Buddhist site makes a comparison with God or uses that on the front page there maybe something wrong with the message they are sharing, Futher investigation is required.
  • I may now very well and truly have seen *everything*...
  • What scares me is how many commentators there are telling him how wonderful he is. (I say 'he' because I assume that the guy with his hands together looking all faux-holy is the author of the site.)

The only day I become an 'instrument of peace' will be the day I am reborn as a set of pan pipes.

  • It's more universalist than buddhist. Ah well.
  • I've looked into universal unitarianism and I just can't take it seriously. No offence meant to anyone who practises in this way - it just smacks of 'no religion' to me. Which is an acceptable way to live your life without labelling it as something else.
  • As someone who tried UU-ism for several months (roughly ten years ago), I can't help but concur, Vix. Nice people, certainly, but at bottom, its just an "I'm-OK--you're-OK" feel-good routine. I felt an implicit smugness about how politically correct they were (and I'm a real far-to-the-left kind of a guy!).

I felt because they were TOO preoccupied with not stepping on anyone's toes. There was no "spiritual traction" to be found.

    Nothing wrong with being wrong!

  • Is it okay to be peeved that some person is misrepresenting Buddhism?
  • Besides, even within ONE religious tradition there is diversity-- no one religion is monolithic (including Buddhism), and never has been.

I wasn't peeved - I actually found it funny, in a 'dark humour' sort of way.

Diversity is one thing. But in order to be diverse you have to have something to diversify FROM, and I have to confess I couldn't see what exactly that something was in this guy's case.

My experience precisely (and around the same time too). They form a committee to discuss forming committees :)
