Heavy Metal

Curious... any buddhists who listen to metal?

I think it would be a very interesting combination :)

I myself listen to metal a lot. I think it actually helps me be more "present" as it gets me pumped up and I get really into the music.

Comments

  • Sure. Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, all kinds of stuff. Some hard like these, some more modern rock like Breaking Benjamin.

It depends on what you classify as heavy metal, I mean I used to be and I guess I still am a big guns n roses and nirvana fan, and I like some of the 70s, 80s rock like zeppelin, rush, black sabbath, rainbow, van halen.

But if its thrash metal then I'm afraid I just don't get it, tough I am getting old now so there are a lot of things I just don't get

  • Punk (I mean the whole range of stuff from the 70's, from Patti Smith to Joy Division), but not metal.
  • "...On a steel horse I ride...I'm wanted...dead or alive..."

The only kind of metal I listen to.

  • Even though I grew up smack in the middle of the metal era, I never "got it". It's always just been really loud noise to me. I guess it's because I was a band geek. I've always leaned more toward Mozart than metal :)

punk, yes. metal, not so much. the metal i enjoy has to have that special something else... like old school foxy shazam and their awesome piano work or idk... flyleaf and the lead singer's fantastic voice. i also like otep, system of a down, slipknot, tool, nin... some of those i don't think are exactly metal though. but my all time favorite screamer is brody dalle from the distillers.
  • Do I as a buddhist like metal? Yes.

That said however, I have never equated the two. To me, they have always been opposite sides of the same coin. Seperate yet the same.
  • I really like punk, as some others. I follow the Brad Warner style a lot, the same attitude that made me question a lot of things for reality (therefore buddhism) also made me question authority (therefore punk)
  • I was a complete metal head for a long time and am only just even beginning to branch out (I actually just sat down and listened to the Beatles for the first time today). Try Gojira if you're not familiar. They're my favorite metal band that has any significant spiritual inclination. I believe they are self described as new age, hippie environmentalists and to add to the unusuality they're French. Any one else have any suggestions of mind expanding music?

Some cool bands ya may never have heard of are Skillet, Static Cycle, and ANew Revolution... but they're not "heavy" metal really, they're more like bands like Breaking Benjamin and Theory of a Deadman and stuff (more modern hard rock than heavy metal).
  • I LOVE metal! But I just started getting into it. I prefer the old-skool heavy metal, like Megadeth and Slayer. Metallica is okay...I've never really heard a song of theirs that I like. None of my metalcore-loving friends has heard of either of any of the big four (megadeth, metallica, slayer, anthrax).

Thrash is the best, in my opinion.
  • I listen to a fair amount of metal. Use to listen to a lot more, but much of what I listened to then bores me now. I couldn't care less what Metallica, Slayer or Testament are up to these days, but Neurosis is like a religion to me.
  • I am a metal head too. I love System of a Down, Slipknot, Foo Fighters and the Big Four etc. As a teenager I was a Goth and used to like Sisters of Mercy and the like but as I got older it evolved into metal
