Buddhism and astrology

Namaste,

Do Buddhists believe in astrology, that planets (or some hidden forces) could influence events, actions? Or, do they believe it's just a ploy by Brahmins to deceive people? What's the common view regarding astrology?

Thanks,
BB

  • Buddhism has its own cosmology, but I don't think it has any astrology. If there are astrological beliefs, they belong to individuals and are probably borrowed from other places.
  • I had interest in astrology for good thirty years during which I went through almost all literature on the subject. It is undeniable that sometimes the astrological predictions did come true. But when I took stock of my own life and the positioning of planets right from day one of my life, it found that it is only 10 to 20 percent of my life events which could be explained by astrology. I am now convinced that predictions do come true in some cases but it is just a matter of sheer concidence. otherwise, it is absolutely trash.

P.S. I also gave the horoscopes of some of my friends and relatives to some good astrologers without telling them to whom the horoscopes belonged. All predictions went heywire. Try this if you still believe in astrology.
