Hi!

I'm new here. Just stumbled upon the site today. There's no "about us" page, so I'm curious. How long has this forum been around? Who started it? All those good questions :-)

It seems to be a remarkably supportive and encouraging place! Kudos to the founders, the moderation team, and the lovely people here!

gassho,

  • Welcome daemyo!

NB Just celebrated its 8th birthday a few days ago. Started by @Brian. I think (this is my impression) it really took off after e-sangha imploded.

It's a wonderful group of folks for sure! Loads and loads of wisdom to be found in these hallowed halls (or rather, hallowed servers).
  • Thanks for the warm welcome, Mountains! And Happy Birthday to NB!

Yes, Brian started it in 2003. We now run it jointly. Check out this recent discussion: http://newbuddhist.com/discussion/12101

Welcome to the madhouse, @daemyo :)

Welcome. :) Feel free to post anything about yourself. Where you hail from, your philosophies, or anything really. Or nothing at all. Up to you. :)
  • Thanks again for the warm welcomes!

I'm a Zen Teacher. Yes, with a real lineage, not out of a book. I've been taking a sabatical from teaching for a few years now. I just stumbled here by accident. This really is a lovely group of people. I'm glad to have found that there is such a supportive site. I think the internet needs it. It's so terribly sad when you live in a place where there are no teachers and there's no sangha close by. Community is important, especially in the beginning.

As for my being a teacher, no worries! I have zero interest in aquiring students, and would prefer to remain anonymous. I'm just here in the "madhouse" with everyone else, practicing, offering a little help where I might, and staying out of the way. LOL!

    Thanks again. :)

So one more for the Zen section of the chorus? I do feel this is more of a huge chorus of voices singing the same tune than a debate forum. We do more relating our experiences and explaining what our own understanding is here, than trying to gain converts to our own practice.

That doesn't mean we can't have some spirited conversations, but if you've poked around a bit, you'll already know that.
  • @Cinorjer, as I've poked around here, I've noticed exactly what you're saying. It's a breath of fresh air! We're each drawn to a flavor of practice that resonates for us. What's wonderful here is the sense of community and mutual support. Thanks for saying howdy to the new kid here. :)

Awesome! I am a beginning Buddhist and at this stage Zen really speaks to me. I know you're not looking for students, but I am definitely looking for a teacher, so I'll be watching your posts with great interest. :)
  • @vixthenomad, I'll do my best to keep my feet out of my mouth!
  • @daemyo - I think there should be a smiley for that...
  • HAHAHA! Yep!
