The Effects of Buddhism on Work and Study.

edited September 2011 in General Banter
What kind of work ethic do Buddhists hold generally?

To what degree is the importance of education raised according to Buddhist teaching?

Please tell me some of your own experiences with incorporating Buddhist philosophy into your work and study regimen.

  • I don't know that there's a "Buddhist work ethic" other than that following the basic precepts of Buddhism will more or less automatically translate into a good one. Right speech, right livelihood, etc, etc will steer us in the correct direction.

My experience of incorporating Buddhism into my work/study regimen involves doing something that benefits other people as much as I can (I'm a nurse, and am learning to do massage at the moment). One of the big things for me was learning to really listen to the voice in my head (the universe speaking to me) to tell me what I *didn't* want to be doing, and to listen to the signs it was giving me telling me what I should be doing.
  • Keeping the word of truth is an example of something done to strengthen buddhist practice. The word of truth is kind of intuitive. It means if you say you are going to do something you do it.

In conjunction another practices is to make sort of resolutions to do things. If you are too unmotivated to meditate one day you can at least make a resolution to improve later. And that wish blossums in the future when the conditions in the world are right for you to meditate the next time.

If our word of truth is not strong you should make small commitments that you know you can keep in order to strengthen. Rather than make a big one that could likely be broken. Sometimes.
