extreme attention?

edited September 2011 in Buddhism Basics
I've come across this "quote" of the Buddha:
"Man's troubles are rooted in extreme attention to senses, thoughts, and imagination. Attention should be focused internally to experience a quiet body and a calm mind." - Buddha

Does anybody know what is meant with "extreme attention"? Perhaps "obsessed", but wouldn't "obsessive attention" be a better translation then? If indeed it has been said by the Buddha maybe someone knows the Pali quote?

I just found it strange because I thought paying attention to feelings and thoughts was a big part of mindfulness.

I put "'s around the word quote because I realise there's quite some quotes floating out there that are wrongly contributed to the Buddha. :)

Thanks in advance. :)
