Compilation of Zen texts and Buddhist histories

edited September 2011 in Buddhism Basics
I am wondering if you guys know of any books that collect texts from important zen patriarchs. Especially Bodhidharma and Hui-Neng. Also good histories of Buddhism. Thanks.

  • Check out Zen's Chinese Heritage by Andy Ferguson-- its a nice compendium of material.

Also, there is the smaller Zen Sourcebook, edited by Stephen Addiss that is very good (and contains a bit more of actual texts, whereas the Ferguson book is more dialogues than texts. The Addiss book has bigger chunks of Huang Po, Bodhidharma, Hui Neng, as well as Japanese guys like Dogen, Bankei, et al.

I highly recommend both books. Both are available on Amazon.

  • Thank you Riverflow.
