I believe Dzogchen should be practiced under the guidance of a skilled and genuine teacher, although that is the problem with the internet today. Information overload, with us believing we understand because we have absorbed so much data. That said, meditation is very important and in my own tradition, day in day out perseverance in this practice (regardless of good, bad or nought) is most important. There are no strict Ifs or Thats like a Monopoly board where the square is defined and one can only tread xyz steps. I think life is a bit more dynamic than this.

Practice though, is critical. And retreats and other such environments can be very helpful for a student's focus and momentum. That one can't have genuine insight outside of a formal retreat though seems very dubious.

    Best wishes,
    Abu

  • "Third, even when you practice, you might be able to abide by the continual flow of Rigpa with the confidence of the View, but if you are unable to continue that flow at all times and in all situations, mixing your practice with everyday life, it will not serve as a remedy when unfavorable circumstances arise, and you will be led astray into delusion by thoughts and emotions."
