Question about violence in school

edited October 2011 in General Banter
Hello, just had a question would love it if anyone has any comments. Right now im teaching in a public school in Nepal. The one thing i really irritating me is the teachers. Sometimes when i dont have class I have to go sit in on another teachers english class. Whenever the students dont do their homework, talk out of place, misbehave or whatever these teachers beat the hell out of them. I mean really brutal stuff. Hitting with sticks on their knuckles, and face , Slapping them full strength in the face, pinching all kinds of crazy stuff. Im really struggling with how to deal with this. I'v said something to one teacher but she hasnt really stopped at all. I guess its very much ingrained in the culture and i might be naive for trying to change it but man i cant stand this. Any ideas?

  • If that's how they do things in that culture and in those schools, you're pretty much out of luck unless you adapt to it. Trying to change the entire thing yourself because it doesn't agree with you isn't going to work out well, as you've noticed.
  • You can't change their way. You can teach your way, and be so good at what you do, that you become an example that other people will notice and might follow. And the children will notice, you can be certain of that.
