Good reasons against the wars iraq/afghanistan

I am trying to go wing man for my friend on fb who spoke out against war. He is getting piled on by people. So the best answers are not inflammatory, rather rational arguments. I already posted that it was pre-emptive and illegal by the UN charter.

  • Its a war.
  • The goal of both wars appears to have been regime changes.
The USA didn’t want Saddam and the Taliban to remain in power.
    But then what?
I can’t help thinking that the war-planners simply stopped at this point.
Or they expected that the people of Afghanistan and Iraq would suddenly emerge as united, moderate, democratic, incorruptible friends of America and the western way of life.
    We know that didn’t happen.

Winning a war is not easy. Winning peace is much harder.
  • You are taking on a pretty tough job as a wing man there Jeffrey. Firstly, I understand how people in the US are mostly war motivated, plus there are so many reasons to why both of those wars are not just-also to add that you will be bombarded by irrational/harsh comments throughout. Good luck though, I guess you just need to get the facts down, present your view in a clear and decent manner and try not to get too argumentative about the whole thing :)
  • Yes that is the case Tom, exactly as it happened. I just wanted to support my friend who posted.
  • Well, he/she is your friend so why not. As long as you do it in a skilful way I do not see any problems. You are wise enough to see that anyway, more so than myself. The internet is a funny thing though, take the comments on any youtube video for example, they quicklyu turn into outrageous arguments and stupid comments. If this was all done in spoken word face to face, I am sure a small percent of what is posted online would be said. It gives those people who do not have the guts to say certain things face to face the ability to express what they actually think in a certain situation.

I debated with people on facebook about the war. I'll say what I posted. Some of these posts may seem out of context, but thats because I was responding to certain things. Feel free to use these as you wish:

Do you know anything about the events leading up to 9/11 and how the US government actually provoked the attack? You know, how we refused to get off of their sacred land even when they asked us repeatedly to? Yeah... Guess they don't teach that in schools.

No, you see, if that soldier was fighting in these wars over in the middle east that are going on currently, he was not fighting for our rights. He was fighting for something else, and for a country other than the America that the founding fathers envisioned. He is fighting for the greed of a small group of wealthy, old men. He is fighting for a corrupt system. He is fighting for an America that is no longer free. He is a victim of our country, the very same one he thought he was fighting to defend. That is just not the case.

The marine's intentions are good, they want to do good, but much bad was done during this war. Roughly 100000 middle eastern civilians were killed during this 10 year war. I'm not saying that the marines did this, I'm not saying they are the killers: I'm saying the government is. The marines are victims too; as you can see that more killed themselves than have to deal with all of the shit they are forced to do. That is why I do not respect this country. Respect the people who want to fight for liberty? Yes. Respect a country who fights for greed? No way.

War kills people, many of them innocent. And it achieves nothing as History shows. We're friends with the Germans, the Japanese, the Russians and yes, even the americans.
    Why?
    Because of necessity and dialogue.
Just as we will surely have to enter into discussions with those whom we currently refer to as our enemies now.

Appreciate the help everyone.. I kind of moved on from the discussion (on FB) because one guy was getting really upset and lashing out. But I think it is an interesting point to be clear on why war or 'the' war is unskillful.

    Good analysis @federica
