What would you notice if you gave up practicing Buddhism for one day?

  • Is it possible to give up practicing Buddhism for a day? What does that mean, what would that look like? For a day, you become a mean, selfish person? You become hedonistic for a day, throwing the precepts out the window? Instead of facing the day calmly, you work yourself into a nervous frenzy? How do you give up Buddhism, even for a day? Why would you want to?
  • once you start the practice, you cannot give it up.

why? because this whole existence is the dharma. how can you run away from the dharma? even if you did, it would always be here. the dharma would always look at you.

we practice just like we shower in the morning or brush our teeth at night. we cannot avoid buddhism once we begin. it is better not to start.
  • I cannot imagine, maybe when it was new to me however it is not just time on a cushion but a way of looking at the world that is different than many of the people around me. The mindfullness that is supported by cushion time is still in every moment to the best of my ability. And then would I be able to look at things dualistically, black and white, at odds for one day? Would I experience things as totally separate from myself rather than experiencing everything as not having a totally independant existence?

Okay I think the point is that this is not just a philosophy of the week for many of us but rather a fundamental way to experiencing the world in a different way. Some days that is wonderful and cool, other days it is a real challenge not because of lack of experience/belief, but because it can be very at odds with how others experience the same reality.

    My thoughts exactly.

  • How would I do that? My practice is the way I behave, it isn't just 'religious' stuff like meditating, chanting or pujas. I don't do all of that every day anyway. The centre of my practice is compassion (or working on compassion, at any rate). So not doing that would mean I'd spend a day being mean and selfish. Which would of course make me unhappy.

    It's not tempting.

I think I would be enlightened that very instant.
