This is for the doom and gloomers

From my friend on facebook:

I offer this up to the gloom and doomers in the media: In the 1800s 70 people out of 100,000 died violently each year, in the 1900s this number fell to 60 out of every 100,000 (and this was with 2 world wars, Stalin, Hitler and Vietnam). Now only 3/10s of one person out of 100,000 meets a violent end. When I was born in 1951 there were only 50 democracies in the world, today there are over 100. In 1976 there were 90 authoritarian countries, now there are only 25. Do not let the Republican strategy of spreading fear and hate sully your mind or your soul. To quote my friend Leonard Cohen - "There ain't no cure for love."

    I like it!
  • lol, says it all basically. The vast majority of people eat the crap spewed by governments up for breakfast. But hey, I am moving to Mars next year so I won't have to bother with this codwallop!!!
  • What is your friend's source for this statistic? I am not trying to be argumentative, but that number does seem a bit low. Also, the statistic could likely be skewed by the skyrocketing population rates these days. With so many more people in general, sheer odds are that that number will go down.

Regardless of that however, I definitely agree with not listening to the fearmongering being spread by our(at least the US) government. They use fear and irrational hatred to justify all manner of atrocities all over the globe. The most important thing is to think for yourself and don't take anything (even the stats that may be more cheerful ;) ) at face value. After all, when they aren't trying to scare us they are telling us "everything will be fine. There's nothing to worry about."
