Fear of flying

Has anyone dealt with it? Fear/anxiety of flying in a plane.

  • I've never had fear of flying. There are therapists who specialize in that, but you probably know that. My recommendation would be to load up on your favorite music, plug in as soon as you board, and bliss out. Meditate before arriving at the airport. Meditate in the boarding area. Meditate after you get to your seat. Calm. Keep those intrusive thoughts out. Put on some inspiring spiritual music, or whatever works for you.

It's ok. It's not Aeroflot you'll be flying on. The plane is in good condition (the mechanics always check before take-off), the pilots are experienced, and there are two of them. It's like going to the dentist; instead of stressing out, just go in there and zone out. View it as nap time.

Thanks, @compassionate_warrior, I already feel a little better about it.
  • The more challenging thing, if you ask me, is going through the security line at the airport. Are you familiar with the rules about luggage and its contents? There's a thing about the size of any bottles of liquid you have in carry-on luggage. Anything potentially suspicious, including small bottles of shampoo, etc., has to be in transparent plastic bags. Your water bottle will be confiscated if it's too big. Check with a travel agent or the airline to get the latest regs.

Yes, I've flown a few times, short flights - this fear is a new thing. Last time I was really freaking out, sweating and shaking, while a guy next to me was talking about his passion for parachuting and saying things like, "oooh, I love this falling sensation". Didn't make me feel better as you can guess :(
  • lol! Where do you think this "new" fear came from? Maybe if you can figure out what triggered it, you can address that underlying cause.

I kind of have a vague idea, but it's difficult to get to the bottom of it. Something triggers it, but (as you said) it's the intrusive thoughts that fuel it.
